2024 G1 Spinaway (Bonus: Flower Bowl)

Get ready for an exciting preview of the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes at Saratoga Race Course! In this video, we’ll dive into the highly anticipated race featuring a competitive field of 11 talented 2-year-old fillies. With the Spinaway marking the culmination of the stakes series for 2-year-old fillies at the Spa, this race promises thrilling action and potential star-making performances.

The field for the Spinaway is stacked with promising contenders, each looking to make their mark and secure a spot in racing history. Among them is The Queens M G, trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., who comes into the race as the morning-line second choice at 7-2. This daughter of Thousand Words is aiming for her third consecutive win at Saratoga after impressive victories in the Schuylerville and Adirondack Stakes. Having drawn post 8, this will be the first time she’s not breaking from the farthest outside post, adding an intriguing element to her run. Despite a seventh-place finish in the Astoria Stakes earlier in the season, The Queens M G has proven to be a formidable competitor with strong showings at the Spa.

Meanwhile, Quietside, the 3-1 favorite, will break from the far outside post 11. Trained by John Ortiz, Quietside dominated her maiden race at Saratoga with a 6 1/4-length victory, showing she is a force to be reckoned with. Owned and bred by Shortleaf Stable, this daughter of Malibu Moon has displayed great promise since her debut, and connections are confident in her abilities.

Another key player is Bellacose, a filly who won her maiden race by an astounding 10 3/4 lengths on July 17 at Saratoga. Originally aimed for the Seeking the Ante, her connections opted for the more prestigious Spinaway, believing she has what it takes to win a graded stakes race. She will break from post 10 under Junior Alvarado.

Trainer Mark Casse, known for his success with 2-year-olds, brings Salted and Sherbini into the mix. Salted, still a maiden but showing potential with two runner-up finishes, will break from post 6 with Javier Castellano aboard. Sherbini, who finished second to The Queens M G in the Schuylerville after a slow start, will try to improve from post 2 under Florent Geroux.

The Spinaway also features Immersive and Pondering, both first-time winners looking to make a splash on the big stage. Immersive, trained by Brad Cox for Godolphin, won her debut race convincingly at Saratoga. Pondering, also owned by Godolphin but trained by Brendan Walsh, was an impressive debut winner at Ellis Park.

Rounding out the field are Strong State, trained by Albert M. Stall Jr. and ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., who will break from post 9; Reliable Source, ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr. and trained by Steven M. Asmussen, who will start from post 3; Slang, under Kendrick Carmouche for trainer Norm W. Casse, breaking from post 5; and Tiz Purple, breaking from post 4 under Eric Cancel, trained by Jorge Delgado.

This year’s Spinaway Stakes not only highlights the best 2-year-old fillies but also serves as a preview for future stars in the making. With so many young talents vying for a Grade 1 victory, the race is wide open and promises to deliver a fantastic spectacle.
