IRAD COMMITS TO RENEGADE — AND THE RIDER REASSIGNMENTS BEGIN
Irad Ortiz Jr. has committed to riding Arkansas Derby winner Renegade in the Kentucky Derby, breaking the stalemate that had been the talk of the backstretch for the past week. The decision means Brad Cox now needs new riders for both Commandment and Further Ado — his other two top contenders.
Per DRF’s David Grening, who broke the news live on the Derby Watch podcast after receiving a text from agent Steve Rushing mid-recording: Luis Saez gets the mount on Commandment, and three-time Derby winner John Velazquez takes the call on Further Ado. Both are serious riders for serious horses. Co-owner Mike Repole on his man Irad: “He is one of the best riders today. He knows Renegade really well, especially after winning back-to-back stakes on him this year.”
The decision carries real analytical signal. Ortiz has been on Commandment, Further Ado and Renegade at various points this spring. His choice of Renegade over a horse who just ran 106 Beyer in an 11-length Blue Grass romp says something, even if we can’t be entirely sure what.

CHIEF WALLABEE ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN — FOR NOW
Here’s a number that matters: 50. That’s where both Chief Wallabee and Iron Honor sit on the Kentucky Derby points leaderboard — right on the cutline as two of the four also-eligibles. With the field all but locked and the final Lexington Stakes tomorrow offering only 20 points to the winner, neither horse can improve their position by racing. They need defections.
History suggests they’ll get them — since 2021, at least four horses have dropped out of the pencilled-in field each spring, which would lower the cutoff to around 38 points and put both horses safely inside. But it’s not guaranteed. Bill Mott has three starts under Chief Wallabee’s belt. He is, in the estimation of most analysts, one of the ten best three-year-olds in training right now. The situation is worth watching daily between now and April 25 entry day.

THE FINAL PREP: LEXINGTON G3 AT KEENELAND RUNS TOMORROW
Saturday’s $400,000 Lexington G3 at Keeneland closes the Road to the Kentucky Derby points series, offering 20-10-6-4-2 to the top five. Brad Cox, who already has three Derby starters, sends out Confessional and a stablemate. None of the eleven entries are positioned to crack the top twenty without multiple defections above them — the leaderboard is simply too top-heavy this year. Think of this one as Derby Week warmup viewing rather than a genuine qualifier, and keep an eye out for Preakness targets among the runners. Post time 5:48pm ET at Keeneland.

MARKET WATCH
─────────────────────────────────────────
CBS Sports / VSiN · April 8-9
RENEGADE 4-1, COMMANDMENT 11/2, FURTHER ADO 8-1 — AND MOVING
The international futures board as of this morning: Renegade 4-1 (favourite), Commandment 11/2, Further Ado 8-1. Those prices were set before the Irad announcement — the news of Ortiz staying on Renegade will likely compress him further and may nudge Further Ado out slightly, with the market absorbing the signal that Irad preferred the horse he knows over the horse with the bigger number.
Brad Cox now controls three of the top five on the points leaderboard and, as DRF’s Aragona noted after learning of the rider decision, the Cox trio at various prices represents interesting value. Commandment leads the official points standings with 150. Further Ado is second at 135. Between them, Saez and Velazquez are capable of winning the Derby on the right horse — Velazquez has done it three times.

ABR’S EARLY LOOK AT THE PROBABLE DERBY FIELD — TIERED
Byron King at America’s Best Racing has put together a clean tiered breakdown of the probable field — who’s safely in, who’s on the bubble, who needs defections. The standout line: Danon Bourbon described as “a standout from this group” among the international qualifiers, with “star potential.” The assessment of Chief Wallabee — “probably one of the ten best three-year-olds targeting the Kentucky Derby” but currently needing two defections to run — captures the painful situation for the Mott/Ball connections neatly.

TODAY’S OPEN QUESTION
─────────────────────────────────────────
Irad Ortiz rode Renegade, Commandment and Further Ado at various points this spring. He picked Renegade. Does a five-time Eclipse Award-winning jockey choosing between the top three favourites in his own book constitute genuine analytical signal — or is this just loyalty, relationships and the comfort of a horse he knows?
