Gulfstream Featured Race Blog for the Ginger Brew Stakes — Guest Post by Chris Cupples

In addition to the excellent daily GP coverage provided by John Pinder, we are playing around with a new idea for an in-depth write-up on one race provided by sharp capper and Horseplayer Happy Hour superstar Chris Cupples. Take it away, Chris!

1          Showgirl Lynne (B)     Hess scratched this one a week ago at Santa Anita, so assuming he shipped. 2nd time going around 2 Turns but would have to improve tremendously to get a piece.

2          Isabel Alexandra         Filly is making her 4th Start and has ran ok in last 2 Turf Routes. No Excuse for either effort after saving ground the entire way

3          Cairo Consort (B) Filly Makes her First Start in the Pletcher Barn, so is expected to move forward. She can win but will do so without my money on her.  Breeders Cup she got a great ride saving every step of ground,  tipped out and was flat in lane just held on for 3rd. Sept 17 race she did have some traffic trouble but when she got a clear lane she could not go by.  Since moving to Pletcher she has outworked a Maiden Claimer Street Vendor and MSW Winning Sprinter Morethanreadyeddie.

4          Bel Pensiero    I expect this one to be on dead send from the gate and will not hang around long

5          Stephanie’s Charm (A) Improving Filly added blinkers Aug when stretching out to break her Maiden on Synthetic, then she ran a big race in her next  with a less than ideal trip.   Shipped to Keeneland during the fall to get a less than ideal ride, 5/6W from the start and stayed out there the entire race. Ran a huge 3rd in the Wait A While saving ground, off turn in hand dead last, had a big response when asked shifting out splitting horses quickly just missed 2nd and went by the 1-2 finishers in the gallop out.    Jose picks up the mount here.

6          Anna Karenine (C). Rumored to be scratching. 2 for 5 making first start in the US for Brown, Will be heavily overbet. Euro Shippers moving to Chad’s Barn in last 5 years 10 for 41 BUT…   Tyler has ridden 4 of those 41 and that was in 2018.   5 of those 41 were at Gulfstream with no winners. But never doubt Chad, she may run off the screen…….. Or she may not load in the gate.

7 (B)    Navy Goat       Filly has done nothing wrong, Kentucky Downs her and Rosario toyed with the field to break her maiden.  Then she came back facing state breds on Synthetic and won easily after sitting behind horses tugging then took over and drew away while being flagged.

8          Lady Azteca     Does not fit with these on what we know.

9          Erna (B)           Making her 3rd Start after debuting at Aqueduct (I refuse to call it Belmont at the…) she nearly took them gate to wire after being nailed at the wire, she galloped out back by       the winner.  Then broke her maiden here at Gulfstream and she won much easier than the neck on the form suggests.   600K is a big price to pay for the 1st foal out of a Turf sprinting mare that won 118K.   Making her 3rd Start definitely could taking a step forward.

VERDICT: Not very often I have a lone A at 12-1 on the morning line, but I expect us to see 8-1 at best if there are no scratches.  If her Wait Awhile Stakes was a fluke she may look like 30-1.

Tri Suggestion

5 / 7,9 / 3,7,9 (add the 6 if scared of Chad and if she runs)

7,9 / 5 / 3,7,9

Will have a saver with 3 on top and in 2nd in hopes to break even.
