Kentucky Derby Day Side Dishes

As much as I enjoy preparing and eating delicious food you won’t find any recipes listed below, but hopefully find some great plays to complement main course of the day.  The extended time between races leave horseplayers looking for opportunities to enjoy the excitement of the day as whole.

Cross Country Pick 5

Leg A: Saratoga Race 9  Jim Dandy G2 1-1/8 (Dirt) – Only need two horses in this spot #1 Happy Saver and #6 Dr Post – unfortunately they both will be short priced.

Leg B: Monmouth Race 9 Clm $25K – 1 Mile (Turf) – Here we get to be creative, none of these runners jump of the page, so let’s look at the pace to help get us closer to the winner.  #4Quid should get a chance at the winner circle, also #7 Make a Stand is a logical contender. A long shot to include would be #8 Boston Light – New barn gets a top rider.

Leg C: Delaware Race 8 Allowance $41K – 1m 70y (Turf) – My top choice here is #12 Bramble Bay (8-1 M/L) – all signs point her if she gets firm ground. #6 Curly Ruth broke her maiden last time out with great numbers over a muddy track.

Leg D: Delaware Race 9 G1 Buzz Brauinger Arabian Distaff – 1- 1/8 (Dirt) – Disclaimer, I typically don’t handicap Arabian races – but I do know pace. There are two heavy favorites in here that like to go to the front.  – I am going to take the top of the top #1 Dance With Me Bw and longer shot #3 Royally Bred who lost narrow lost to her in the same race last year.

Leg E: Woodbine Race 9 G3 Vigil  6f (Dirt) – One runner stands out:  #7 Pink Lloyd has won his last four races at this level The others to take a look at are #6 Olympic Runner can be competitive and long shot #2 City Boy.

Saratoga Late Pick 5

Since we have 2 of the 5 races done already – Let’s throw in the remaining 3 and take down the the Late Pick 5 at Saratoga as well; what the heck it’s Derby Day!!

Leg A: Saratoga Race 8 Allowance $64K  1-1/16m (Turf) – All of the competitors in this spot have been in races that have been won with tactic of Catch me if you can.  The top contender in this race is #1 Klickitat will do the same today.  I think #3 Good Old Boy and #4 Barleewon can be competitive with a more evenly run scenario.

Leg B: Saratoga Race 9  Jim Dandy G2 1-1/8 (Dirt) – Only need two horses in this spot #1 Happy Saver and #6 Dr Post – unfortunately they both will be short priced.

Leg C: Saratoga Race 10 G2  Prioress 6f (Dirt) – Two stand outs and a potential off the pace runners are all we need for this leg – Standouts:  #1 Kimari #5 Frank’s Rockette – Long shot at least from the morning line is a dirt sprinter for Chad Brown #4 Secondary Market.

Leg D: Saratoga Race 11 Woodward G2 1-1/4 (Dirt) – Has even money favorite #2 Tacitus figured it out now? Last time out he put on a show in the Suburban.  – He could have – and I will include him on any of my tickets on this race but I also think it could have been to the setup, the opening quarter of that race was extremely soft and he was up close and away he went.  – I like the chances of #3 Moretti and #4 Global Campaign and #1 Math Wizard , Saez will go the front on the number #4 and and win or things could setup for a closer other Tacitus.

Leg E: Saratoga Race 12 Clm 40Kn2L  1-1/4 (Turf) In this payoff leg I will lean on 4 runners #4 Doubly Blessed has been off for several months – New Barn (Maker) – Top Jockey (J. Ortiz) #8 Life On Top drops in class and shown the ability to close well. #9 Traffic Pattern – Chad Br- (enough said) and finally #12 Shootin the Breeze almost got it done last time – distance is perfect for him.

– Let’s make it happen!!!
