#3 GOLDEN FLASH (12/1 ml)
Very interesting longshot here with a long series of drills for Asmussen. First should note that this Into Mischief filly worked a furlong in a respectable 10.0 at the April Ocala sale (one tick off the day’s best) before bringing a $300k sale price (was a $250k yearling purchase prior to that). Worked in company with ABROGATE on Nov 29, who had previously won her Churchill debut by 6 lengths a couple of weeks beforehand, then emerged from her drill with GOLDEN FLASH to win an Oaklawn allowance on Jan 24 before running a close third (beaten two lengths as the favorite) in the Dixie Belle Stakes on Feb 28. Following that very notable drill, GOLDEN FLASH then worked a bullet 5 furlongs from the gate with BOLDOR, an older 5yo barnmate who came out of that drill (and off a long layoff) to win two straight stakes races, most recently the King Cotton Stakes here on Feb 6. Following that, GOLDEN FLASH worked the first of 4 separate times with FOUETTE, who happens to be the 3/1 morning line favorite in today’s opener (obviously a good performance there would flatter GOLDEN FLASH further, so keep that in mind). Also recently, GOLDEN FLASH appeared to work with HAPPYMAC, who was last seen running second by a neck at Keeneland last October. There’s also something highly unusual that Asmussen did with GOLDEN FLASH, those being the two back-to-back workouts on consecutive days (Feb 6-7), which definitely lifts an eyebrow from an oddity standpoint. Just a lot to like here at the big price.
