0-for-2 on Saturday, with AMERICAN LAW and STAGE RAIDER each finishing second. Race 6 winner PREVALENCE looked sensational, and appears to be a viable Kentucky Derby threat until proven otherwise.
Gulfstream – Race 5
#1 SWEET PENELOPE (20/1 ml)
First-time starter for McPeek comes into this race having worked heads-up on three separate occasions with FOREVER BOSS, who came out of those drills to run second by a nose (at 14/1 odds) in a 7.5-furlong turf race on Jan 13. Most recently, SWEET PENELOPE worked with TABOR HALL, who was last seen running second (while finishing 6 lengths clear of the rest of the field) in a one-mile race here on Jan 3. Take note that TABOR HALL is entered in Race 4 today (half an hour before this one), so a nice effort there would flatter SWEET PENELOPE further. Also worth noting that today’s rider Lanerie is showing a nice flat-bet profit with McPeek over the last year (from 44 starters). Appears live here at a big price.
Gulfstream – Race 8
#7 EARNESTINE N HAZEL (9/2 ml)
Grassy first-time starter for Clement comes into this race having worked in company a couple of times each with horses who have fared well in two-turn turf races at Tampa recently. EARNESTINE N HAZEL worked on 11/28 and 12/5 with THE RIGHT STUFF, who won by open lengths at Tampa on Jan 20. Following that, EARNESTINE N HAZEL worked on 12/12 and 12/20 with RAVIR, who ran second by a length (while finishing 5 lengths clear of the rest of the field) in a one-mile turf race @ Tampa on Dec 30. Clement reaches for his go-to rider Rosario for this one, and she definitely appears live today.
