They begin today’s edition with the sad news that Kentucky Derby first past the post Medina Spirit has died suddenly after routine training in California. They consider the impact of this on the sport, while leading vet Piet Ramzan explains how and why sudden deaths can occur in racehorses. Nick and Jane also reflect on Rachael Blackmore’s nomination as BBC World Sports Star: she would become the first racing personality to win since 1967. They discuss last weekend’s racing, the resumption of the Robbie Dunne trial and much more besides. Johnny Murtagh pays tribute to the life and career of Choisir, while Douglas Taylor is this week’s bloodstock guest.
