SARATOGA – 8/12/22

RACE 1: 1-5-4-6

#1 IM JUST KIDDIN is a second time starter with big turf pedigree being a half to Bar of Gold and 2 other turf winners.  This filly debuted earlier in the meet and ran well, and having that experience at this stage is of great importance.  #5 HIGHWAY HARMONY is a firster by Mo Town, who has one debut winner in his first crop.  The dam here was winless on turf, but trainer Jorge Abreu has proven to be quite adept with first timers on the lawn.  #4 NICE ‘N SPICY is a firster by freshman sire Sharp Azteca, whose progeny are 25% first time out.  The dam side here has no pedigree for the lawn but this is a top notch barn.

RACE 2: 4-1-2-6

#4 HONEYCOMB trained in company with recent MSW winner She’s Keen.  She goes 3rd off a layoff this afternoon and trainer Rusty Arnold is 18% with maidens on dirt dropping in for tags ($3.45 ROI).  This filly has had two prior opportunities on dirt and her debut was solid.  This is also likely the right class level.  #1 AWESOME ALLY VEE is a third time starter switching surfaces for trainer Mike Lauer.  She ran a respectable race on debut and should be dangerous if able to run back to it this afternoon.  You’re also going to get a square price on her given the connections.  #2 RUN UP THE SCORE is in for a tag for the first time and trainer Chad Brown has modest numbers with maidens on dirt at the Spa dropping into the claiming ranks.  The inside post will help her stay close from the outset.

RACE 3: 4-1-6-3

#4 MY BOY TATE is back off a layoff for trainer Michelle Nevin in search of lost form.  He was last seen running poorly in the Haynesfield, and given the layoff since something obviously went wrong that day.  Nevin is 29% with dirt sprinters off 100-200 day breaks ($2.25 ROI) and he has run well fresh in the past.  #1 SAINT SELBY is very dangerous in this spot given his ample early speed.  He is quick enough to get clear on paper and comes in with razor sharp recent form.  His trainer began to turn around a slow meet with 2 wins on Thursday.  #6 NY TRAFFIC is the one to beat after a listless effort in the Vanderbilt.  He drops in class to face NY breds once again and is a threat from just off the pace.

RACE 4: 1-6-5-8

In a total grab bag, #1 LATEST EDITION is interesting at a square price.  She had some early trouble last time out when uncomfortable rating off the pace.  From that point forward her trip was actually very good, but for a lightly raced filly the issues were significant enough.  She now gets lasix as a pace player on the inside for hot connections.  #6 QUEEN OF LIES stretches out in distance but has no form that would lead you to believe she wants more ground.  Her last effort was her first for trainer Tony Dutrow and she showed no improvement, but she is taking the biggest class drop in racing.  In the event this thing boils over early, #5 TAPPLE CIDER is a player in the closing stages.  She is a late runner who was stuck in traffic last time out first off a long layoff, so expect improvement with that race behind her.

RACE 5: 3-4-7-2

#3 I AM THE LAW has elevated his game in his last two on dirt, including a sloppy track run on July 21 where he was stuck inside.  He should get an ideal stalking trip today for a barn that has quietly had a very solid meet.  #4 KHAFRE is the one to catch facing weaker than he did in his last dirt start.  Trainer Brendan Walsh gave up on him being a dirt horse and he eventually broke his maiden on turf, but this is the right scenario for him to return to a dry strip.  #7 SOUTHERN PASSAGE gets massive class relief after showing little last time out against tougher.  He’s been in need of a drop in for a tag for a while and his trainer picked up a win yesterday.

RACE 6: 3-4-2-1

#3 MASHNEE GIRL is interesting on the cutback in distance and return to NY bred company.  She was third last time out in a tough N1X on closing day at Belmont and should be in an ideal stalk and pounce position this afternoon.  Her speed is a weapon at any distance.  #4 BANK ON ANNA was hurt by having an inside post last time out.  She lost any chance when steadied sharply on the backstretch, especially given the caliber of competition she was facing.  A forwardly placed trip would help her chances today.  #2 SECRET LOVE ran an even 5th last time out against N2X open company and now returns to the NY bred ranks.  She was the recipient of a poor ride two back when dragged back off the pace, so give her a long look as her best races are good enough to contend.

RACE 7: 2-4-6-5

#2 BAHAMIAN CLUB is a massive play today given the issues she faced in her last start.  Not only did she ride the rail during a stretch when the inside paths on the inner turf were slower, but she got stuck in massive traffic in the lane.  A cleaner trip on the friendly inside paths with Irad Ortiz, Jr. in the irons will make her tough to handle today. #4 DIAMOND HANDS was another stuck inside last time out when she was on the lead.  She now shows up in the barn of Todd Pletcher after being purchased for 375k at a horses of racing age sale in July.  #6 LINDA’S GIFT was no factor last time out when 5th behind a wire-to-wire winner on opening day.  She should be within range from the start today and will be a square price.

RACE 8: 7-1-5-6

There’s reason to believe that #7 SEA FOAM can be dangerous here as the main speed.  He returns from a lengthy layoff after winning on New Year’s Eve last year and is quick enough to clear from the outside.  His love for Saratoga makes him a major player as well.  #1 BANKIT returns off a layoff for trainer Steve Asmussen after showing little in the Godolphin Mile.  His prior 2022 effort was not impressive, so there’s concern about whether he can run anymore.  #5 TIERGAN comes back quickly off a huge win over this oval 9 days ago.  He is now first off a claim in razor sharp form and this is likely his best trip.

RACE 9: 6-3-5-1

The better price in this field is #6 SARAH’S SPLENDOR relative to #3 COOLCATSNKITTENS.  The former drops in for a tag and cuts back in distance.  This filly ran respectably on debut after a slow break when in a slow paced race.  She took no money at 2nd asking and showed little, but she is a player here facing weaker.  Coolcatsnkittens faced much better last time out and broke like a shot before being reined in abruptly.  The drop back in for a tag is encouraging given the performance two back.  #5 ELI DANCER is trying turf for the first time despite having little to no pedigree.  This barn has quietly had success in NY from a limited sample of runners.

RACE 10: 6-2-11-8

#6 CLASSIC LYNNE is a very interesting player here getting lasix after encountering traffic trouble on the inside last time out.  She can be forwardly placed here in a good spot for a barn that has had a good run at the meet.  #2 FIST FULL OF DICE goes 2nd off a layoff coming out of a solid effort where she chased the pace before getting overhauled late.  This is a reasonable spot for her at a price.  #11 SHE’S A MIA is a late runner who has no will to win.  She is 0-3 since joining the care of Christophe Clement but has been second each time.  If she can find a way to overcome her issues with winning then she is a player for top honors.
