On the Horizon – Gulfstream Park – Friday (March 5, 2021) – John Pinder

Late Pick 5  Sequence

Race 6: SELECTION: 6

#6 Create a Story has been knocking on the door at this level going longer and should be able to open it easily against her level of competition today.  She also runs for a new barn and is under the care of a trainer that does very well first of the claim, Gilberto Zerpa.

Race 7: SELECTIONS: 3  –  2  –  7

#3 Crystal Coast looks to have inconsistent running lines at first glace, but a deeper look reveals that this Animal Kingdom filly does her best running on turf.  Returns to the turf today and also gets Irad Ortiz in the irons, which was a winning combination two races back.  #2 Cheerleader Barb continues to progress into her 3 year-old campaign for trainer Kathleen O’Connell.  Last time out did not get a good start a had to play catchup the whole race, with a better start she projects to be a very rational contender.  #7 Celestial Cheetah has never raced on the turf but her breeding suggests that she should have no problem on the grass.  She has been competitive at the mile distance, gets class relief and her speed figures on dirt are above average for this group; if she likes the turf she is a win contender.

Race 8: SELECTIONS: 3  –  4

#3 Sir Ollie is a 3 year-old homebred colt out of Quality Road who is making a third career start for trainer Bill Mott.  His connections seem to be very content keeping him at the level where he is competitive, this will be his third consecutive start against state-bred colts for a purse around 44K.  #4 Shoo Shine This Gemologist colt who has always shown good early speed, returns to a sprint today after winning at a mile last time out.  Runs for a solid trainer in Michael Dini, who has not run many horses at the current Gulfstream Park meet, but when they show up they usually run well.

Race 9: SELECTIONS: 4  –  1 –   6  –  9*

#4 Kissing Frogs is a 4 year-old filly making her fourth career start for Bill Mott.  In his Hall of Fame training typical pattern, we see this a horse winning, being given some time off and returning ready to face tougher competition; keeps Junior Alvarado in the irons, who he has been riding great on the turf lately.  #1 Toffen showed that she was indeed ready of the layoff last time out, when she took the field from gate to wire displaying great early pace.  Jockey Joe Bravo has been aboard for her last four starts, in which she has three wins from four starts.; she returns today looking to continue that winning streak while stepping up in class.  #6 Lashara showed lots of promise last summer when she ran against quality fillies at Saratoga and Belmont .  Today she returns to the races after a 5 month rest for trainer Mark Casse, who is excellent at developing young horses and allowing them to mature and run their best races.   #9 Movie Moxy * MTO –  should be included if they are unable to run this race on the turf as intended.

Race 10: SELECTIONS: 4  –  1 –  10   –  7*

#4 Captain Ron is a lightly raced 8 year-old that seems to be finding his best stride, as he has only missed the board once in his last 10 attempts.  In his most recent race he was bumped at the start and lost by a small margin, with a more advantageous trip he should be in contention; keeps Paco Lopez in the saddle.   #1 Hero Tiger will run first time out for trainer Giberto Zerpa, who is top notch with horses first off the claim.  Retains the service of top jockey Irad Ortiz who was aboard last time when this gelding won a 5F claiming race on the main track that was indented to be on the turf.  Was given a little time off, during which he had a bullet workout over at Gulfstream Park West; should be ready to put in a good effort for the new connections.  #10 Tropicat is second off the layoff for owner-trainer Ralph Nicks who continues to be rock solid with his runners here at Gulfstream Park.  Draws the outside post and will more than likely be wide going into the turn, but this should not be a problem for this gelding as he has a natural presser-closer running style.   #7 Miles Ahead* MTO  – if this sprinter dirt specialist makes into the starting gate he will be favorite and should not be left off any horizonal wager.
