On the Horizon – Gulfstream Park – Wednesday (March 3, 2021) – John Pinder

Late Pick 4  Sequence

Race 7 : SELECTIONS: 8  –  3

#8 Second Mate is dropping from state-bred stakes company to todays claiming event.  This Mike Maker trained gelding does his best running late and should get the opportunity to put that on display, as the there is a good projected pace early.  #3 Honey Won’t will take another shot at this distance and class level, same as last time, in which he was out-finished by a length and a half.  In that race he was too close to a wickedly hot pace and and could not make up any ground; a more favorable scenario today is very plausible.

Race 8: SELECTIONS: 4  –  1  –  1 1`

#4 One Eyed Jack is a lightly raced 5 year-old gelding out of Uncle Mo.  He drops in class for a excellent claiming trainer in Saffie Joseph Jr. first off the claim; a signal that horse may need to work on a few things, but I believe he has enough raw talent to be able to win at this level.  #1 Alejandro’s Team is getting significant class relief today and is also switching surfaces.  His only lifetime victory came at Gulfstream Park when he ran on the main track due to the race being taken off the turf.   #11 Ranger Up was competitive at this level last time out and faces the same level of runners today.  What is also note worthy is that his last work on the 24th of February, a bullet workout with a time faster than any of his others for the past year.

Race 9: SELECTIONS: 8  –  1  –  10

#8 Valletta won her last race at a slighter higher class level than the one she will be participating in today.  She has always been great at settling in behind the pace and closing well, with the added distance I only see her continuing to be very competitive.  #1 Lido Key is a certified closer that should benefit from the stretch out in distance even though she is facing tougher competition.  Trainer Mike Maker on the turf is a best as they come; Top Jockey Irad Ortiz in the irons.  #10 Diamond Sparkles is one that will not be favorite in the betting, but has a chance.   Several of the races that this filly has participated in and held her onw were graded stakes efforts at Woodbine and at Keeneland.  Based her willingness and ability to close this filly could have a say in this 12F test on the turf.

Race 10: SELECTIONS: 2  –  8  –  1  –  4

#2 Frenchmen Street is a gelding with good early speed that is dropping in class for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.  He has been claimed in his last three races, so trainers and or owners are seeing potential value in this 6 year old gelding out of Malibu Moon.  Saffie has solid win percentages across the board, but his top ranking statistic is 1st off the claim.  #8 What’s Inside is attempting 5F on the turf and is 2nd off the lay off for trainer Jane Cibelli, who has a good win percentage with those runners.  Last time out he ran a solid race at this level after a 8 month layoff.  Seems to fit at this level and should be ready to improve.   #1 Seven Gems finished second last time out at this level, losing by a nose.  Retains the services of Jose Ortiz.  #4 Discretionary Marq is a turf sprinting specialist that is always competitive regardless of racing venue.  His last race was his first for trainer Kelley Breen, her runners seem to get better with after a couple of starts of being under her care.
