On the Horizon – Saturday (February 20, 2021) – John Pinder

Late Pick 5 Sequence:

Race 8: SELECTIONS: 1 – 6 – 8

#1 Ghazaaly is a three year old colt with exceptional breeding, son of Curlin out of a Giant’s Causeway mare.  He ran a good debut race just 28 days ago, where he showed speed at the beginning and at the end of the seven furlong contest.   Pletcher brings him back at the same level but stretching out to the mile and 1/8 distance; shows confidence.  #6 Swingman returns after a three month layoff to face maiden company at slightly lower level.  Trainer Kenny McPeek is not setting the world on fire with his  current win percentage at Gulfstream, but his statistics with 1st time Lasix runners is very good.  #8 Midlaner likes to run on or near the lead which is a plus,  in my opinion, for younger horses going longer distances.  He gets Lasix for the 1st time and Castellano in the irons, both factors should help in today’s contest.

Race 9: SELECTIONS:  11  –  6  –  4

#11 Souper Energizer is a hard trying 4 year-old gelding who is always close.  Won his last time out at a similar level, today he runs for a new barn that is good with 1st after the claim runners; keeps Paco Lopez in the irons.  #6 Zipalong goes out for a new barn today after just missing at this level last time out.  Has solid speed figures and should be very competitive against this group today.  #4 Mr. Axel could be overlooked at the betting windows due to his connections, small barn and a jockey that does not have good win percentage, but the horse may have found the right class level.  He lost by a nose to Zipalong last time out, that was his first race at MC $20K level, same as today’s race.

Race 10: SELECTIONS:  8 –  3  –  1

#8 Dreams of Tomorrow broke his maiden last time out with a strong performance at Aqueduct race course.  Trainer McGaughey looks to have this one primed and ready to go as indicated by his bullet workout eight days ago.  #3 Briefcase Bully did not have a go of it last time, where he was wide throughout and had nothing left to finish.  His prior races all indicate that he is capable of much better.   #1 Chocolate Bar is versatile runner who get some class relief today for trainer Michael Maker, gets Tyler Gaffalione in the saddle.

Race 11: SELECTIONS:  7 –  3

#7 Mrs. Danvers checks all the boxes and will be a deserving post time favorite.  This 4 year-old daughter of Tapit should have no problem with the distance as she won convincedly at going longer in the Grade 3 Comely back in November at Aqueduct.  #2 Gibberish is a front running specialist that rarely puts in a bad effort.  Winner of her last 3, she looks to take this group from gate to wire for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.

Race 12: SELECTIONS:  5 – 7  – 4

#5 All Good won at a higher class level and should not be overlooked;  a move that trainer Mike Maker doesn’t perform very often, but is successful when he does.  #7 Juan Pablo continues to get more class relief after missing victories by small margins in his several past attempts, retains Paco Lopez for this race.  #4 Spinning Kitten also get class relief , in addition will cut back slightly in distance from her attempts at the higher levels.  If the pace does not get out of control, either too fast or too slow, this gelding should be in contention for the win.
