Race 5

Mooney Love

Bill Mott – Joel Rosario

4-year-old colt; Australia – Mooney Ridge (Indian Ridge)

Previously trained by Andreas Wohler. A winner of three of his eleven starts, Mooney Love has been highly tried throughout his career, contesting the Italian Derby last May. He finished midfield there and has generally been knocking around in Stakes races, although he had been struggling to break through at that level. That changed last time out in emphatic fashion, as he landed a Listed race at Cologne with a dominant display, making steady headway from the rear, leading within the final furlong and storming clear. That was his first run for his previous trainer and his first run in blinkers, both feasible angles for that improved display, although he has likely just improved physically from 3 to 4. He doesn’t get the headgear here, but looks a progressive sort who should have no problem with this extra distance and seems to handle any ground. Middle-distance turf form in the US is rarely that strong and with Mooney Love looking capable of at least a 90 Beyer – more likely 95+ – he should be a very tough nut to crack here. A tactical race is probably his biggest danger.
