Belmont Plays for 5/27/23 By Robbie Fazzone

BELMONT 5/27/23

RACE 5- TURF ONLY

2- DOUBLE DREAM- Curlin homebred makes debut for C. Brown in this filly Sp. Wt. going  1 1/16 miles on the turf. Appears to be spotted positively in here, as she was training at Monmouth most recently and considering that Brown runs a bunch of horses at Monmouth, I would think that by running here, as opposed to the filly Sp. Wt. going this distance on the grass at Monmouth- where he has two in- this Monday, he feels good about this fillies ability. Draws nicely with Prat and should run big in first career start today.

RACE 6

2- HAPPY FARM- Was a game winner going this seven furlong trip at this 2x optional claiming level two back at Aqueduct in March, before being out sprinted and putting in a grinding outside stretch run to finish 4th in the slop at the same level going six furlongs on a day when it wasn’t easy to make up a lot of ground in latest 4/23. Nine year old gelding has retained good form going back to last fall and will like getting back to Belmont, where he has done most of his best running. Stretches back out to seven furlongs for this, getting back on a dry track will help and though likely more circumstantial than anything else, it’s still worth noting that this horse is 5 for 6 in his career when breaking from the rail, as will be the case today. Reliable old pro should run another big race and factor strongly in here.

RACE 7- TURF ONLY

5- QUARREL- Ran a good 2nd in first career start in an off the turfer for filly Sp. Wts. going six furlongs last September. Came up empty when 4th in another off the turfer at the same level and distance at odds on in second start in October. Finally got on the grass in her third start, where she sat just off the pace setter, took over turning for home and then gamely held through the final furlong to get the score over filly Sp. Wts. going 1 1/16 miles on the Aqueduct turf when last raced in November. Has been away since that maiden win and returns in a tough spot in this three year old filly stake at seven furlongs on the turf. Although Ribaudo isn’t necessarily known to have his horses wound tightly for their returns off layoffs, he can have them ready to run big and has done so over the past few years with turf sprinters, Pulsate and Neuro, who both ran big when beaten narrowly off layoffs. Looks like a filly with some ability and this seven furlong trip should hit her sweet spot. Can run big and threaten in the competitive Soaring Softly.

RACE 10- TURF ONLY

5- PHOTON- Was game in defeat at this state bred filly Sp. Wt. level going longer in lone two turf runs last fall. Went back to the dirt following those two races, where she was 2nd at odds on going one mile in November, followed by a finished early 5th going six and a half furlongs in the slop with blinkers added before being put away for the winter in December. Returned off a four month freshening to finish 4th on an off track in a state bred filly Sp. Wt. at six furlongs in latest 4/29. Has the blinkers removed today after wearing them in her latest two and that first run back in the slop last month should’ve served as a nice tightener for her return to the grass in this state bred filly Sp. Wt. at seven furlongs. The shorter trip in here should suit her and she is a strong threat in the nightcap.
