Sunday, Recapped: Sea Strike Runs Off in the Curlin
The rescheduled Curlin Stakes turned into a showcase. Sea Strike, the Chad Brown–trained Midshipman colt, stalked the pace under Flavien Prat and drew off to win by 8¼ lengths for his first stakes victory, stopping the clock in 1:48.94. Favorite Chief Wallabee had to settle for second. It was the horse PTF and Joe Migliore had flagged on the show as the interesting Chad Brown stretch-out — and it made for a nice weekend for the barn, coming a day after Chad sat down with us for Walk the Shed.
In the Grade 3 Adirondack for 2-year-old fillies, Stress Relief came flying late at 6-1 to run down the leaders, giving trainer Kinnon LaRose his first career graded win. And the Grade 2 Glens Falls went to Survie, the 2-1 favorite, who rallied from sixth against a slow pace to win by 1¾ lengths in her U.S. debut — a second stakes score on the day for jockey Flavien Prat, and a win for trainer George Boughey, the same barn that gave us Bow Echo’s Sussex last week.
Another Mandatory Monday at Gulfstream
It’s also Mandatory Monday at Gulfstream Park, where the Rainbow Pick 6 carries a mandatory payout that forces the whole pool out — the kind of day sharp players circle. Mondays at Gulfstream have become the new Fridays, with a revamped, player-friendly menu built around 15% takeout: a $1 Players’ Place Pick 8 (from Race 1), a $5 Players’ Late Double, and a $3 Players’ Late Pick 3. PTF and ITM’s Chance Rains go through the full card.
Stakes Day at Presque Isle: the Satin and Lace
There’s stakes racing in Erie today, too. Chance Rains has the Presque Isle card, headlined by the $100,000 Satin and Lace Stakes — a six-furlong sprint for fillies and mares that serves as an early pointer toward September’s Grade 2 Presque Isle Masters. His top pick is Lost and Found, a Brittany Russell filly he makes the one to beat off her unbeaten record over the Tapeta. Read the card →
Tonight: Manitoba Derby Night at Assiniboia Downs
The biggest night of the season out west is here: the 78th running of the $125,000 Manitoba Derby lights up Assiniboia Downs tonight, the first jewel of the Western Canadian Triple Crown. Nine sophomores go a mile and an eighth on the dirt, with the race carded as Race 6 (post around 10:40 p.m. ET). A collection of recent American acquisitions fills the field, led by 2-1 morning-line favorite Western Warrior — a gelding bred and once trained by Mark Casse, now conditioned by Dino Condilenios. Robertino Diodoro’s speedy Forty Twenty and the lone Canadian-bred Really Ralis, a winner of the Derby Trial, are among those looking to spring an upset.
There’s a big wagering angle, too: the ASD Jackpot Pick 5 carries a mandatory payout on Derby Night, with a carryover north of $400,000 that should swell the pool considerably.
