And the BCBC Winner Was: Rob Dolan with John Gaspar

And the BCBC Winner was Rob Dolan….with John Gaspar

Rob Dolan didn’t need to pick a winner all weekend. He needed the right exacta at the right time, and he had planned for it before the first race on Friday.

Dolan won the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge (BCBC) at Keeneland on the back of a Sovereignty–The Puma exacta in the Classic. It’s his second big title of the year. Six months ago John Gaspar had him on And the Tournament Winner Was as the Xpressbet Preakness Challenge champion (episode 39, May 19). This time Gaspar introduced him as a man who “now has added the Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge to his resume.”

The contest

Gaspar set out the format on the show:

  • A $10,000 buy-in: $7,500 went to the player’s bankroll and $2,500 to the prize pool.
  • $600 minimum bets on three of the five BCBC races on Friday, Oct. 30, and on seven of the nine on Saturday, Oct. 31.
  • The full $7,500 bankroll had to be wagered over the two days.
  • A record 668 entries built a prize pool of roughly $1.67 million, paid down to 25th place, with 15 NHC seats on top (full BCBC results here).

Dolan played two entries. He won both seats, one through Xpressbet and one on TwinSpires during the Saratoga meet. He played both on TwinSpires from the president’s suite at Gulfstream Park, where he and his friends have spent the last three Breeders’ Cups.

The plan on paper

Patience wasn’t his edge. “Patience is not my normal strong suit,” he told Gaspar. Writing the plan down was.

At the top of his sheet he writes the bankroll, the target bankroll and the minimums. For the big contests he also works backwards from the last race. He assumes the winner will have to make a major play in the finale, so he writes down the bankroll he’d need to win at a range of odds.

“It serves as my guidepost for what bankroll I need to accumulate,” Dolan said. “You’re able to see the path on how to get there.”

This weekend the path ran through The Puma, his key horse in the Classic. The Puma figured to be a double-digit price, so Dolan didn’t need a huge bankroll. That’s why he never went all-in early.

Friday: one blank, one hit

Dolan expected to lose all three Friday minimums. On one entry he did.

The other entry was saved by Aidan O’Brien. Earlier in the day Dolan had loved Domain Expansion in the Juvenile Fillies. She took money and finished fifth behind Emphatic. Then Haffner, his pick in the Juvenile Turf, started taking money too, and Dolan didn’t want to be left out if he won.

“I just held my nose and did it,” he said. He bet Haffner to win and played a Haffner–Folsom Blues exacta. Haffner won at 7-2, with the favorite, Folsom Blues, second.

He went into Saturday with roughly $5,500 on one entry and $8,100 on the other.

Saturday: chipping up to the Classic

Filly & Mare Sprint into the Turf Sprint. Seven required plays from nine races pushed Dolan into the race before the one he wanted, the Turf Sprint. There, Cy Fair was one of his strongest opinions of the weekend. So he played daily doubles into her:

  • One entry had a $500 double from Ways and Means and a $100 double from Foie Gras.
  • The other entry had two horses, one of them R Disaster.

Ways and Means won, with Foie Gras second at 21-1.

Live to Cy Fair, he put her underneath in exactas. Bacio was the last horse he added on top. He’d thought Bacio was a vulnerable favorite and almost left him out.

“Am I really going to be this stubborn again?” Dolan remembered asking himself. “It’s not going to kill me if I add it and I lose.”

Bacio won and Cy Fair was second. That entry jumped to $15,700, enough to bet The Puma to win in the Classic. The other entry sat at $6,400.

The middle of the card. The second entry had its own target: a Sovereignty–The Puma exacta. All day Dolan watched the probables. The exacta held near $40, which told him he needed about $4,500 in that bankroll.

On the bigger entry:

  • A $600 show bet on Precise in the Filly & Mare Turf lost. She was seventh.
  • A $600 exacta of Englishman over T O Elvis and Hymn lost.
  • A $600 show bet on Fully Subscribed in the Distaff collected when she ran second to Nitrogen.

On the smaller entry:

  • A T O Elvis–Englishman exacta in the Sprint hit. He had the reverse on his other entry, using the two entries against each other the way he did all weekend.
  • A small win bet on Hymn lost. Hymn was fourth.
  • In the Mile, his Notable Speech–Puerto Rico exacta, a Puerto Rico win bet and doubles forward all missed. Deterministic beat Notable Speech, and Puerto Rico was seventh.

The Classic

Dolan went into the Classic with $13,340 on one entry and $4,495 on the other. The leaderboard had him 267th with one race to go.

  • Smaller entry: the whole $4,495 on the Sovereignty–The Puma exacta. “I didn’t have any more money to squeeze on that one,” he said.
  • Bigger entry: a win bet on The Puma and a small Napoleon Solo exacta over Sovereignty and The Puma, “because I’m a little superstitious.” He’d backed Napoleon Solo in the Travers. The last $41 went back on The Puma to win.

Early in the race he thought the pace was too slow. Then Sovereignty swept to the front on the turn for Bill Mott, with The Puma right behind him.

“I’m jumping up and down like an idiot,” Dolan said. “Luckily no one has video.”

Sovereignty held The Puma, a 17-1 shot, with Knightsbridge third. The $1 exacta paid $31.30, and the $4,495 entry finished at $140,694, enough to vault him past 266 entries and into the title. With an estimated $467,000 first prize on top, per TwinSpires, it came to a little over $600,000.

Then came the wait to see whether anyone had passed him. “I went from thinking, ‘Oh my God, I think I won,’ to completely convincing myself I had not,” he said.

Nobody did. Asked whether the win had finally got him even, Dolan laughed: “I’m finally up for my lifetime.”

Takeaways from the champion

  • Write the plan down: bankroll, minimums, target, and the bankroll you’ll need in the last race at different odds.
  • Work backwards from a key horse. A double-digit target in the finale meant no all-in early.
  • Play two entries against each other. Reversed exactas and split doubles keep both alive.
  • Watch the probables. He sized the winning bet from the exacta probable all day.
  • Don’t let stubbornness cost you. Adding Bacio at the last second saved his weekend.
