Race 1:

Despite having had little pace to run at, CAROLINA SUN (12/1 ML) managed to record her best effort in almost four years when finishing 1 1/2 lengths third in the restricted Glenn Petty Stakes at Colonial two-back. That effort signaled a return to form for the Susan Cooney trainee, and whilst she couldn’t quite match that effort figure-wise when returned to two turns last time, she certainly didn’t do anything to suggest she isn’t riding a wave right now, holding third after racing keenly close up to a hot pace that set the race up marvelously for the deep closers – an effort that demands a pace upgrade. Returning to 5 1/2 furlongs today is a positive for this veteran, and if drawing in off the also-eligible list, she could be worth throwing on some tickets at a price. BALTIC (5/2 ML), who was caught racing against the ‘flow’ two-back prior to a win, and WHENEVERUREMEBER (7/2 ML), who was too keen to see out a mile last time, also appear to be in slightly better form than their recent PPs might suggest.

Race 2:

SCRUTINATOR (4/1 ML) was running a respectable race from the rail when forced to check in upper stretch last time. While the interference did not cost him the race, it did hinder his momentum, and he ultimately did well to regroup and finish as close as he did, running on nicely again late. The runner who caused the mishap, LASTING LEGACY (who was later DQ’d), finished just a half-length in front of SCRUTINATOR, and it’s easy to argue that the latter was the better of the two. That is significant because ‘LL’ then returned with a ten-point Beyer improvement at Delaware next time, adding to the strong form that that race has produced (four of the six runners improved their Beyer by 10+ points next time, while the runner-up has won his subsequent two starts, including with an 80 Beyer last out). On that basis, we’re probably best served to use SCRUTINATOR’s two- and three-back efforts – when he ran Beyers of 65 and 63 – as a better guide to his ability, and while he may still have a tough time beating PLENTYOF ROUGE (6/5 ML), he shouldn’t be overlooked for Kravets when it comes to vertical wagering possibilities.

Race 5:

TURNS TO GOLD (5/2 ML) trained well leading into her debut last month and duly delivered a nice effort, but a green and sluggish break left her with too much to do, and a fast-finishing second had to suffice. She should be sharper second out today and looks a real contender to consider in a winnable-looking contest, aided by a jockey/trainer combo who boast some impressive statistics together.

Race 8:

Although likely still hurting from the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint fiasco, trainer Cal Lynch must be taking some satisfaction in knowing that his barn is in fine fettle at present, and his GOOD GOLLY MSFOLLY (6/1 ML) shouldn’t be totally dismissed in today’s feature. This daughter of GALAWI’s last effort in an off-turf event on the mud at Delaware wasn’t anything to be excited by; however, her two-back effort on the grass – which is her only turf start to date with Lasix – does make her live here, as she overcame a wide trip to finish a staying-on half-length third behind subsequent Maryland Million Ladies Stakes winner MOPO at Delaware. Getting back to the grass today with a huge amount of pace to run at, this gal has the chance to replicate that level of form – or improve on it with an extra furlong to work with – and she has to be shortlisted at a fair price.
