Analysis & Selections By: Dean Keppler @Keppskorner
BEST BET: 5-Scatify (Race 2)
Race #1: Selections: 1-5-6
A beaten favorite in the last pair, 1-Della Terra moves inside of her main rivals this afternoon for conditioner Marl Glatt, and should have more of a stretch punch, second off the layoff. Blinkers off, 5-Tiger of the Sea flashed solid early zip before tiring to third off the 13-month layoff when in against the top choice and a pair of other returning fillies, and looms large again with that leg-stretcher return try out of the way. The daughter of Smiling Tiger figures to be forwardly placed once again for trainer Brian Koriner. 6-Pavel’s Etoile runner-up in the aforementioned Sept. 27 event, this filly has now hit the board in five of seven career tries.
Race #2: Selections: 5-2-6
5-Scatify goes two sprints to a route today for trainer Jeff Mullins, exiting a sharp game second at Los Al. The Justify colt makes his third start of the form cycle today. The “light bulb” angle is in place for 2-Toppers At Seaside, who broke through in career try number 13 with a 10 ¼-length maiden romp and 87 winning Beyer on Oct. 3. 6-Spun Not Stirred was a well-beaten fifth in his most recent try, but should get a much stronger, livelier race flow to close into this afternoon. The 3-year-old gelding is reunited with winning pilot, Tiago Pereira.
Race #3: Selections: 2-4-8
Trainer Phil D’Amato is only 2 for 28 (7%) with grass sprint firsters at DMR the past five years, but 2-Marla Hooch looks live at first asking. This bargain filly is by Om (12% debut runners & 19% turf sprinters) and has trained well for this afternoon’s unveiling. Jockey Antonio Fresu was aboard firster Nell’s Legacy for this barn last August. The Simon Callaghan-trained 4-Pronounce It is by Listing, who was a G3 winner sprinting on turf. According to DRF Progeny Summary, he sports a solid 12-4-1-1 total race record with his progeny, and this barn is solid with juveniles. 8-Vicky Lyn (by Grazen) has trained well over the Santa Anita synthetic track for conditioner Brendan Galvin, but he’s 0-for-54 with debut runners the past five years.
Race #4: Selections: 7-2-4
7-Crypto Ride has never run at Del Mar but drops in for a career-low claiming tag for Simon Hobson, with good positional speed, and figures to try similar gate-to-wire tactics that led to a solid score at Emerald three back. Claimed back in mid-August for $16k, 2-Mongolian Max is in for the $10,000 level this afternoon off a solid work tab, which included a bullet five furlongs in :59.1 on Oct. 16. The 4-year-old gelding sports the field’s best last-out Beyer (77). The 2-for-28 4-Petesoldfashioned usually prefers to finish underneath in the vertical exotics and exits as a runner-up at this level on Oct. 12.
Race #5: Selections: 9-4-1
9-Fight Back makes career start number 13 this afternoon, but his first for a tag for conditioner Simon Callaghan. The 4-year-old gelding has shown little speed in all those dozen previous starts, but does come running late. Perhaps today’s equipment change (blinkers on) keeps him closer, and he can run these down late with the class relief. 4-Shapoval hasn’t hit the board in his last three tries, but drops in for a first-time tag today for trainer Jeff Mullins, and this jockey-trainer combo has had good success with MDSW to Maiden claiming dropdowns on grass from minimum attempts (2 for 5/40%). Newly gelded 1-P Town Prancer goes two sprints to a route this afternoon for Team O’Neill and drops back in for a tag today, moving all the way inside after two outside draws.
Race #6: Selections: 2-5-3
2-Kilmer did not show much when dismissed at 39-1 in his Oct. 10 turf sprint debut last month, when finishing ninth, but moves to dirt today on the class drop into $32k maiden claimers and could improve on the stretch out. The Temple City juvenile exits back-to-back bullet drills on Oct. 26 and Nov. 2. 5-Flashy Fritz was a solid, much-improved second over a trio of today’s returning rivals when dropped to this level on Oct. 5 on the surface change and figures to be on or close to the lead again this afternoon. 3-Lee’s Baby Boy closed decently enough to round out the superfecta in the aforementioned Oct. 5 event behind Flasy Fritz and can move forward today, making his second start off the bench.
Race #7: Selections: 3-8-1
Six of eight of today’s colts and geldings return from the Oct. 4 grass sprint. 3-Titanic Thompson battled determinedly with the frontrunners through taxing early splits before coming up just a neck short in third, and the Grazen colt figures to be winging it again from the get-go. He co-tops the field’s best last-out turf Beyer. 8-Gold Council rallied for the place spot at 46-1 off the seven-month layoff in the aforementioned Oct. 4 event, and will likely employ similar tactics today with the same amount of speed signed on. The gelding blew out a sharp three furlongs for this on Nov. 1, and this barn has solid second off the bench stats. 1-Check’s On the Way will need to work out a trip from the fence, but has had excusable efforts in the last pair. The gelding was wide from an outside draw in last and broke slowly two back.
Race #8: Selections: 3-4-11
3-Big Coin did not earn a prominent figure for her last runner-up try at Los Al back on Sept. 19 in a short field, but it was a solid effort nonetheless. The daughter of Clubhouse Ride stumbled a bit at the start, raced wide thereafter, and came up just a neck shy of the win. She has worked well since then and may get overlooked in a weak field. 4-Imnotvanillasky has yet to hit the board in three career starts for Glatt, but drops further in class today, and her first two main track Beyers from this past summer at Del Mar would make her competitive in this spot. 11-Victoria’s Jewel is drawn outside the other frontrunner, 7-Lady K Westfall, which should help her chances for the Papaprodromou barn dropping from $50k to today’s $20,000 level. Lady K, however, sports the field’s best last-out Beyer (46) off her runner-up finish when dropped to this level on Oct. 24 and would be no surprise if she outpaces her main speed rival.
