Analysis & Selections By: Dean Keppler @Keppskorner
BEST BET: 2-Tamarando Beach (Race 2)
Race #1: Selections: 6-2-1
A competitive turf route for Maiden Special Weight fillies kicks off the Saturday 9-race program. One of two East Coast shippers, 6-Magica, goes out for trainer Graham Motion off back-to-back fourth place finishes at Laurel and Delaware. This lucrative trainer/jockey combo has won five of their last six turf races together. 2-Pura Vida Princesa has shown good early zip in all of her grass tries for Team O’Neill and exits a solid runner-up effort and career-best Beyer (75) going this one-mile trip just two weeks ago. 1-My Perfect Way goes two sprints to a route today for trainer Tim Yakteen while making her second try off an extended 14-month layoff. The daughter of American Pharoah should appreciate the additional real estate, exiting a closing third when last seen on Oct. 13.
Race #2: Selections: 2-3-6
The Dean Pederson-trained 2-Tamarando Beach adds blinkers and drops in for a first-time tag this afternoon, having posted two of the best main track Beyer numbers in the field. This barn is a solid 4-for-10 (40%) with a $2.52 ROI with MDSW to MDCLM dropdowns in dirt sprints the past four years. 3-Shadowban has uninspiring a.m. drills for conditioner George Papaprodromou, but is by Grade 1 winner Bodexpress, who gets a strong 18% with his juvenile debuting prodigy. This jockey-trainer combo is 2 for 4 (50%) at DMR with a lofty $9 ROI with firsters. 6-Voucher flashed speed and tired to sixth at this level on debut Oct. 13 and is eligible to move forward off that effort.
Race #3: Selections: 1-5-10
1-Margot’s Boy has never run this short five-furlong distance in 31 career starts, but has won four of his last six grass tries for trainer Jeff Mullins and exits a sharp six-furlong score on Oct. 12 at this level. 5-Please Focus is the speed of the speed in here this afternoon and shortens back up to five panels today, where he figures to be a gate-to-wire threat. 10-Betterdaysrcoming (Ire) is stuck on the far outside but makes his first try off the Steve Knapp Oct. 10 claim and recent win when facing a trio of today’s returning rivals. The 5-year-old’s back-to-back (84) turf Beyers make him a legitimate threat for the repeat.
Race #4: Selections: 3-4-7
3-Captivator showed solid early zip through some taxing early splits before settling for second in an encouraging well-backed runner-up Oct. 10 unveiling for trainer John Sadler. The Charlatan juvenile steps off that top try but figures to be a handful with any normal second-out progression. Trainer Phil D’Amato does not usually win first-out, but 4-Caves (by Hard Spun) lures jockey Juan Hernandez today off an encouraging work tab, and this jockey-trainer combo is 4 for 16 (25%) with a positive ROI with firsters the past five years. Blinkers off 7-House of Mischief finished third behind Captivator in the aforementioned Oct. 10 Santa Anita dirt sprint, but gets off the rail and can move forward off that even effort for trainer Sean McCarthy.
Race #5: Selections: 4-9-6
4-Jane Austin makes only her second start on turf, but surely needed her return grass sprint try on Oct. 10 when returning off a 16-month hiatus for Glatt. The Tapit filly stretches out second off the bench, is lightly raced, and has shown ability with a pair of solid victories to start her career over the Santa Anita main track. The switch to Hernandez is a big positive this afternoon, and she figures for an upfront pressing trip. A multiple winner over the track and distance, 9-Word Play must negotiate a tricky outside draw, but is in super form for trainer Jeff Mullins, having finished first or second in her last half a dozen starts. The 4-year-old filly co-tops the field’s best last-out Beyer. The speedy 6-Certitude (Fr) shortens back up to a mile today after getting run down late and settling for second. Berrios knows how to ride this filly perfectly, and she is a solid contender again today despite meeting a stiff lineup.
Race #6: Selections: 1-9-8
The 1 for 21 1-Naismith is hard to trust on the win end and must work out a trip from the rail, but holds a double Beyer advantage over the rest of this field and exits a sharp runner-up effort at this level on Oct. 5. 9-Last Call Paul is 1 for 28 (0 for 13 at six furlongs) and even less reliable than the top choice. Still, he has 15 underneath placings on his resume and figures to get a favorable outside pressing trip today with Maldonado back aboard. 8-Horizon Wildcat goes turf to dirt on the class drop today for trainer Brendan Galvin and earned a competitive figure for this field two back with his maiden-breaking score at Los Al.
Race #7: Selections: 6-1-4
The late-closing 6-Quantum Energy usually finds traffic trouble with her running style, but exits three consecutive third-place efforts at this level and projects to get a livelier flow to utilize her late kick fully. The jockey change to top turf pilot, Hector Berrios, may prove key. A popular commodity at the claiming box the last several months, 1-Hey Demps makes her first start for the Papaprodromou barn, that’s a solid 8 for 22 (36%) with a $4.05 ROI with first off the claim turf runners routing the past three years. The 5-year-old mare shortens up to a mile and draws a good post. Class dropping 4-She’s a Joker sports the field’s best last-out grass Beyer (78) for Miller and owns a solid late pace figure in a contest that figures to have spirited early splits.
Race #8: Selections: 5-1-2
This stakes event does not have any tried and true seven-furlong specialists, but two-time E.B. Johnston S. winner 5-Man O Rose looks like this afternoon’s clear frontrunner for trainer Jeff Mullins. The 9-time winner has put together back-to-back scores (on dirt and turf) and makes only his third start of his 2025 campaign. Turf to dirt 1-Shea Brennan must negotiate a trip from the rail but returns to the Del Mar main track, where he kicked away to a decisive 3 ½-length win two-back with a (92) Beyer speed figure. 2-Clovisconnection is 12 for 23 lifetime and a multiple stakes winner returning to Southern California off a series of solid stake efforts at Emerald Downs. The consistent 5-year-old gelding should appreciate the turnback to seven panels.
Race #9: Selections: 4-2-8
4-Winning Patriot has seen his Beyers increase significantly in his last three turf one-mile tries for trainer Carla Gaines and should trip out nicely today directly behind the frontrunners. The 4-year-old gelded son of Om sports the field’s best last-out grass Beyer (80) and has come back to fire sharp back-to-back a.m. drills since that last fourth-place finish, including a “best of 43” bullet four furlongs in :47.1 on Halloween. Trainer Peter Miller sends out three geldings in the nightcap. 2-Left Hand Man has run a pair of subpar efforts on turf but makes his second try off the claim today, returning to that surface, and should come running late behind his stablemates, which will ensure a solid early pace. 8-Cardiff Crack rallied for the place spot at 33-1, behind next-out winner Vodka Vodka, and figures to get another live race flow to close into this afternoon for conditioner Bill McLean.
