Analysis & Selections By: Dean Keppler @Keppskorner

BEST BET: 4-Divine Wind (Race 4)

Race #1: Selections: 1-2-3

1-Can’t Say That goes two sprints to a route on the class drop for conditioner George Papaprodromou and should fall into a favorable ground-saving stalking journey from the rail. The juvenile filly is by multiple G1 winner Vinno Rosso, who gets a solid 17% with dirt route runners. 2-Bear’s Board (by Mastery) also tries two turns for the first time for Team O’Neill and has finished second in two of four lifetime starts. She figures to be sent along onto the lead this afternoon by jockey Antonio Fresu. Another stretch-out sprinter, 3-Definitely Probable, is by Improbable, who gets a strong 22% with his route offspring. This Michael McCarthy-trained filly has yet to hit the board, but the class drop and stretch-out should allow for probable improvement. She exits the same sprint event as the top choice.

Race #2: Selections: 7-3-8

It took 13 tries for 7-Toppers At Seaside to break through the maiden ranks, but he did it with style two-back with a 10 ¼-length romp at Santa Anita. A speed and fade when overmatched in his most recent try over the local strip, the gelding drops down to a more realistic level today and should prove tough to reel in late with an alert break. 3-City of Angels goes turf to dirt on the class drop and has run some main track Beyers that are quicker than par for this class level. On raw numbers, she’s the fastest in this field if she can work out a trip. 8-Noble Gary finished a wide third when facing off against a pair of today’s returning rivals on Oct. 5 at this level and will need to work out a better journey from yet another outside draw.

Race #3: Selections: 3-1-2

Stakes-placed on grass at Colonial Downs, 3-Kid Charlemagne, removes the blinkers for his return to dirt on the class plunge. The 2-year-old gelding can spring back to life in this softer spot, switching to Rispoli, who is 9 for 27 (33%) riding overall for these connections. His main track drill over the local surface has been solid. 1-Classico moves back to dirt and drops in for a first-time tag this afternoon for Team O’Neill. This lucrative jockey-trainer combo is 3 for 8 (38%) and 6-for-8 ITM with turf to dirt MDSW to Maiden Claiming dropdowns the past two years. 2-King of Success (by Twirling Candy) goes two sprints to a route for the all-important third career try off a pair of even fourth-place efforts, facing softer.

Race #4: Selections: 2-4-1

A $51,879 Pick Six carryover begins here. 2-Divine Wind is an interesting shipper from Kentucky, making her first start in the O’Neill barn off a three-month freshening. The 3-year-old daughter of Daredevil has trained exceptionally well the last several weeks in Southern California, including an eye-catching “best of 84” four-furlong gate drill in :46. 2 back on Oct. 5. 4-Moonlit Courage was a well clear third when facing a trio of today’s returning rivals at this $20k Maiden Claiming level on Oct. 18 and now makes the third start of the form cycle this afternoon for Mandella. She gets a tepid vote over the Michael McCarthy-trained 1-Tupelo, who finished second in front of the top choice in the aforementioned Oct. 18 event when moved to dirt and is a logical win threat again, making start number two at this reduced level. Both fillies have worked well since their last start.

Race #5: Selections: 9-6-7

9-Dixie’s Delight has run second in three of six career tries for conditioner Blaine Wright and gets a key rider change to jockey Juan Hernandez this afternoon on the class drop. The 3-year-old filly should prove tough to run down late. A beaten favorite in the last 6-Amelia’s Echo makes career start number 10 today for the D’Amato barn while dropping in for a career-low claiming tag. The 3-year-old filly has run some of the fastest dirt sprint figures in the field and looms the filly to beat at this reduced level despite already having several chances. 7-Que Bella Luna has not been out in nearly a year but has trained steadily for a solid layoff barn and is the lone 4-year-old in the field, soon to be five.

Race #6: Selections: 2-4-1

2-Headstrong Ways finished second at this level on Sept. 28, and that “key” race has produced three next-out winners. The sophomore daughter of Munnings has worked a half-dozen times since that runner-up effort for trainer Richard Baltas. The Smiling Tiger filly 4-Freya goes turf to dirt off the Oct. 19 Blaine Wright claim and should be fine switching to the main track. She just missed the show spot in a bulky field in her most recent try and should relish the seven-furlong trip. 1-Coralgableskaylin was beaten by double digits in the last pair but adds blinkers today and is likely to show more early zip from the fence.

Race #7: Selections: 7-3-5

The lightly raced 7-Christel Clean has run well in all three career starts for Sadler and has already run a Beyer par (76) for this class level, winning her debut over this course this past summer. The 3-year-old daughter of Violence got a much better post on the redraw and has already proven she can sit and finish up strongly. Recent maiden winner 3-Timekeeper’s Charm skipped away to a 5 ½-length score on Oct. 18 and is nicely drawn outside for a favorable tracking trip for her first crack against winners. 5-California Rocks goes turf to dirt on the turnback and has enough main track pedigree to suggest she’ll handle the surface switch for her low-profile connections. A spirited early race flow would help enhance her chances in the deep stretch.

Race #8: Selections: 3-1-2

The G1 Goodwood winner, 3-Nevada Beach, drops into this softer spot after getting outrun in the BC Classic three weeks ago for team Baffert and has finished first or second in four of five career tries. The sophomore son of Omaha Beach makes his third start of the form cycle this afternoon, is reunited with winning pilot Juan Hernandez, and should overhaul this field late. The multiple graded-stakes placed 1-Indispensable returns off the mini-freshening with a strong work tab and likes the Del Mar main track (2-2-1) from six starts. Berrios has been aboard for both of this colt’s victories. The consistent 2-Westwood steps up in class today off a maiden win, and back-to-back most-recent seconds, but has enough early zip to be situated on or close to the lead this afternoon.

Race #9: Selections: 3-4-9-10

A solid field of well-bred juvenile colts closes out the pick six. The Baffert-trained 3-Blacksmith (a $525k Keenland purchase by Liam’s Map) is an obvious win contender and short-priced choice in the Saturday nightcap off a strong even-money runner-up in his Oct. 25 unveiling, where he posted a field’s best (91) dirt Beyer. The juvenile colt has worked three times since that effort and should be a handful in start number two. His stablemate, 4-Authentic Patriot, is training quickly for his initial try, including back-to-back bullet five-furlong drills on Nov. 12 and 19. 9-Secured Freedom is a son of Practical Joke, who fired a sharp bullet “best of 30” five furlongs on Nov. 8, and this jockey-trainer combo is 4 for 18 (22%) with a $3.73 ROI when teamed up with debut runners the past 18 months. The third Baffert juvenile colt is 10-Winston Ave. He is a son of Quality Road who draws well off the barn’s typical spirited a.m. drills and would be no surprise here with Rispoli in the saddle.
