Analysis & Selections By: Dean Keppler @Keppskorner

BEST BET: 1-Sunk Coast Fallacy (Race 5)

Race #1: Selections: 1-5-2

Blinkers on 1-Conquistadora was reluctant to load on debut but rallied sharply to round out the trifecta in her Oct. 3 unveiling for trainer Michael McCarthy and is a logical fit today with any normal second-out progression. She moves from an outside post to the rail this afternoon and retains Hernandez. 5-Ramayana rallied for second despite getting shuffled back some early on in her Sept. 26 grass sprint unveiling for Richard Mandella and now stretches out for start number two. The daughter of Uncle Mo should appreciate the additional real estate. 2-Channel Place stretches out in start number two and has worked well in the 13-week interim for Team O’Neill, exiting an August maiden event that’s since produced four next-out winners.

Race #2: Selections: 1-2-4

1-Scary Fast Ride goes two sprints to a route for trainer Sean McCarthy and may try and go gate-to-wire this afternoon in a field that appears (at least on paper) to be lacking any serious early speed. 2-Shared Future defeated a pair of returning rivals at this level in her most recent try at Santa Anita on Oct. 12 and now shows up today for the $50k claiming tag. The 6-year-old mare is a logical repeat candidate sporting the field’s best last out main track Beyer (83). A beaten tepid favorite in last at this level, 4-Lolo Le Plume figures to make her late run but doesn’t appear to have a lot of early zip to close into.

Race #3: Selections: 5-1-4

5-Smart Code has been a beaten favorite in three of his last four starts for conditioner Mark Glatt, but has run well nonetheless. The 5-year-old gelded son of Honor Code figures for another favorable upfront pressing trip and should prove tough to reel in late if able to shake free. 1-Centrodelantero returns for the Mullins barn as a first-time gelding, removes the blinkers, and returns to turf off the mini-freshening. This 5-year-old, who has done most of his racing at Gulfstream, is eligible to wake up in a big way for a new barn and has shown he can handle grass. 4-Mr. Leasure set some taxing early splits when finishing behind Smart Code in his most recent try on Oct. 12, and may try to sit and pounce today from a stalking position.

Race #4: Selections: 5-4-7

5-Press Your Luck moves back to dirt after a series of grass tries that extend back to the beginning of this year, but drops in for a career-low claiming tag, and this filly’s lone win came over the main track. Class dropping 4-Wild Cat Danzing shortens back up to a sprint this afternoon, where she was a winner two-back at Los Al and projects to get a spirited pace to close into. 7-Looks Lucky moves back to the main track and drops back down to the $10k claiming purchase price from two-back for Glatt. This 4-year-old filly’s lone win came over the Del Mar dirt.

Race #5: Selections: 1-2-7

1-Sunk Coast Fallacy stretches out and moves to turf in career try number two after showing some solid ability on debut Oct. 13 when rallying late for third despite traffic problems. Trainer Mike Puype is 5 for 17 (29%) with a positive ROI with dirt to turf second-time starters the past four years. The gelded son of Mo Town adds Lasix and switches to red-hot Demuro. 2-Hardtobebetternow hasn’t been out in 11 months but drops out of the King Glorious S. into this softer spot this afternoon when last seen and showed his affinity for routing on turf with a solid runner-up on debut last November over this racetrack. The gelding adds Lasix today for a good layoff barn. 7-Warm Sun and Brew finished a strong second despite a compromised trip on debut Oct. 5 and should relish today’s stretch-out in career try number two. This barn has solid stats overall with second-time starters, and sire Clubhouse Ride is a respectable 13% with turf routers.

Race #6: Selections: 3-7-5

3-Leya’s Candy goes second of the claim for trainer Andy Harris after showing solid early speed before tiring to second against slightly softer on Oct. 19 and figures for another favorable upfront pressing trip. The 6-year-old gelding may prove tough to reel in late with top gate pilot Edwin Maldonado back aboard. 7-Maniatic (Ire) has shown very little in three stateside starts for Mandella, but takes a substantial class drop today while making his initial dirt try. The 4-time winning Irish import has trained well over the Santa Anita synthetic track in recent weeks. 5-Contrary Chieftain drops in class and makes his second start off the mini-freshening for conditioner Tim McCanna. The gelding was a sharp second over this course over the summer.

Race #7: Selections: 8-9-2

8-Balaza (by Sir Prancealot) finished an even fourth in her Sept. 1 grass sprint unveiling for Mullins and is eligible to move forward off that effort today, switching to jockey Hector Berrios. This barn is a solid 6 for 24 (25%) with second-time turf sprint starters. 9-Jacklyn Lucas is improving and switches to turf for the all-important third career try for trainer Steve Miyadi. The juvenile filly is by Grazen, who gets a solid 16% with turf sprint prodigy. The Peter Miller-trained 2-Violets Song shortens up to a sprint for career try number two, and adds blinkers today. This barn has won two of its last four tries with a similar equipment change with its second-time starters, and improvement is likely.

Race #8: Selections: 4-2-5

The short-priced 4-Grand Slam Smile is consistent as they come, evidenced by her 8-6-1 slab from 15 career starts. The multiple stakes winner is proven on dirt and turf, likes seven furlongs, and should prove tough to overhaul this afternoon for trainer Sean McCarthy. 2-No Cap rallied for the place spot with a career-best (81) dirt Beyer on Oct. 12 and now shortens up a tad on the class hike. Rispoli sticks here after piloting the multiple stakes-winner Sneaker, who has never tried dirt and has nothing but a strong turf pedigree. The daughter of Oscar Performance defeated the top choice in the downhill California Distaff S. in last. The lightly raced 5-Tina Turner is a perfect 2-for-2 for trainer Steve Knapp, but also gets a stiff class test this afternoon returning to the main track and stretching out to seven panels.

Race #9: Selections: 8-4-1

8-True Patriot is 1-for-19 but stretches back out this afternoon and figures to get a live race flow to help utilize his strong late kick. Jockey Hector Berrio sis likely to work out a favorable journey this afternoon in the Sunday nightcap. 4-Lady of Power exits a series of better-than-looks wide trips when routing on grass and finished an OK fourth in her most recent effort against similar on Oct. 3. Second-time Kimura today, and she’s likely to be much closer with a more beneficial trip against a suspect field. 1-Lady Rider proved she could handle turf in her most recent runner-up sprint finish on Oct. 19 and stretches out this afternoon for trainer Vladimir Cerin. The 3-year-old filly has hit the board in 5 of 6 career starts and should work out a decent trip breaking from the rail again on the stretch out.
