BEST BET: 7-The Mizen Queen (Ire) (Race 1)

Race #1: Selections: 7-2-1

7-The Mizen Queen (Ire) rallied strongly for second in her first U.S. try on Aug. 16 despite a slow pace and is likely to move forward off that encouraging effort. 2-Gathered hasn’t been out in 10 months but is training sharply for her return to action and adds Lasix today. The barn’s go-to pilot, Umberto Rispoli, is back aboard. 1-Nafisa makes career try number 11 this afternoon, having hit the board in eight of 10 starts to date for Baffert. She makes her second start off the bench today and will break through one of these days. Not entirely convinced it’s this afternoon, however.

Race #2: Selections: 4-7-5

4-Man Child was a sharp gate-to-wire winner against $20k claimers on Aug. 17 and is a logical repeat candidate back in against this $12,500 level. The 5-year-old gelding sports the field’s best last-out main track Beyer (80). 7-Get Her Number disappointed as the favorite on Aug. 16 when going a flat mile at this level, but now goes first off the claim today and shortens back up to a sprint. This former Grade 1 winning gelding has obviously seen better days, but must be respected against this level of competition. 5-Gypsy Tears finished behind the top choice in last, but is another taking the class plunge today and was a solid winner over the track two back, going a furlong shorter.

Race #3: Selections: 7-2-6

7-Still Bulletprpoof is an interesting shipper from Gulfstream for trainer Patrick Biancone, who finished second in his grass debut back on June 6. He stretches out today, having trained sharply locally, and is by Grade 1 winner Idiot Proof, who boasts a strong 21% record with his turf route runners. The Baffert-trained 2-St Petersburg was a disappointing heavy favorite in his June 21 Los Al debut and followed up that effort with a well-beaten fifth in the Best Pal (G3) when stepped up to face stakes competition. The pricey son of Constitution drops back down into the maiden ranks today, switches to grass, and makes the all-important third career try. He’ll likely be hustled along at the start by Hernandez and attempt to wire this group. 6-Honey’s Choice (by Liam’s Map) has trained well for his unveiling, but this top barn rarely fires at first-asking—going 0 for 15 with turf route debut runners.

Race #4: Selections: 9-7-5

9-Revera holds the experience edge over several of these with a bang-up second in her Aug. 17 debut behind the Baffert runaway winner Explora. The daughter of G1 winner Lexitonian earned a strong (76) Beyer for that effort and is a logical threat for Sadler with any normal second-out progression. The juvenile filly 7-Sounds Lucky is a $550K OBS purchase by Tiz the Law, debuting for Team Baffert off a spirited work tab. This barn has won with a half dozen firsters this 2025 seaside meet and looks to have yet another live runner. Tiz the Law gets a solid 16% with his juvenile debuting prodigy. 5-Wild Like the West, by top sire Into Mischief, has trained sharply in the a.m. for conditioner Richard Baltas, including a “best of 21” five-furlong gate drill on Aug. 28. This barn has won with their last two out of three dirt sprint firsters at Del Mar.

Race #5: Selections: 3-7-1

3-Rehearsal (Ire) finished a much-improved second for D’Amato when dropped to this level on Aug. 17, finishing in front of a trio of today’s returning rivals. The 4-year-old filly deserves another chance to break through at this reduced level and sports the field’s best last-out turf Beyer. 7-Caitlin Fever finished a troubled trip ninth behind the top choice in the aforementioned Aug. 17 event, but is eligible to improve today, making her third start of the form cycle for trainer Peter Miller and second try for a tag. 1-Aleramo (Ire) makes her second try off the eight-month layoff and drops in for a first-time tag with the addition of Lasix. This barn has achieved a 32% success rate (11 for 34) with a $2.29 ROI over the past five years, utilizing MDSW to Maiden Claiming turf route dropdowns.

Race #6: Selections: 1-2-5

1-Explora (by Blame) was a smashing 4 ¾-length debut winner for team Baffert on Aug. 17 with a strong (88) Beyer, and this barn has won today’s Del Mar Debutante S. (G1) a record 11 times. Her stablemates all look to have talent and continue to improve with racing experience. Grade 3 Sorrento victress, 2-Himika, is 2-for-2, winning both starts by a combined 10 ¼ lengths. The pricey $900k Curlin daughter came back to work a bullet “best of 60” five furlongs in a sharp :58.3 on Aug. 31. 5-Bottle of Rogue, finished behind the top choice in her debut but improved sizably in career try number two with a 6 ¾ length victory when stretched out to six and a half furlongs. The Vino Rosso filly is a late threat from behind.

Race #7: Selections: 11-1-8

11-Yours Sincerely (Ire) was an eye-catching last-to-first winner after breaking slowly in her Aug. 16 stateside debut for D’Amato and has trained sharply since that top effort. She’s likely to catch another live race flow to close into while stepping up into stakes competition. A grass sprint maiden winner back in May, 1-La Ville Lumiere stretches out for the first time for conditioner Michael McCarthy, off two sharp tries to start her career. She’s trained extremely well in the interim. 8-Queen Bay ran to her backing in well-bet debut back on May 30 with a solid 2 ¼-length win over a short field. Her pedigree suggests that two turns is certainly in her wheelhouse and lures Hernandez this afternoon off the mini-freshening.

Race #8: Selections 5-2-3

5-Speedy Wilson has won three straight for D’Amato, which includes back-to-back stakes wins, and he’s never been off the board in all five career starts. The sophomore colt returned off a nine-month layoff with a sharp score in the Real Good Deal S. over a pair of next-out winners, and adds Lasix today on the stretch out to a mile. The blinkers on equipment change for 2-Lyell’s Song may prove key today for a colt that’s shown a world of talent but has been unfocused in the stretch drive at times. He exits back-to-back strong efforts over the local strip at this distance and makes the third start of the form cycle today. 3-Del Mar Jerry steps up in class off a decisive win on Aug. 8 with a field’s best last-out (99) main track Beyer when moved back to dirt. The Miyadi-trained gelding is 6-for-13 lifetime.

Race #9: Selections 4-7-9

4-Medoro was super impressive when returning off the seven-month layoff on July 20, when kicking away to a solid win, and has already proven she can handle an additional eighth of a mile. The Osunita S. has already produced a pair of next-out winners, and this gal projects to be forwardly placed today with Rispoli back aboard. Any time trainer Graham Motion shows up in Southern California, he merits a long look. 7-Gimme a Nother (Saf) has settled for second in three of four graded stakes events since arriving in the U.S. and was nabbed late in the G2 Canadian S. at Woodbine in his most recent try. The 5-year-old mare lures Hernandez for her Del Mar debut and has been facing top fillies and mares at various venues. Multiple Grade 2 winner 9-Hang the Moon was a flat fourth when returning off an eight-month layoff in the Yellow Ribbon H. (G2) on Aug. 9 but figures to be much tighter for D’Amato with that race under her belt.

Race #10: Selections 5-6-8

5-Titanic Thompson finished a much better than looks beaten favorite fifth in a troubled trip on Aug. 10 when getting shuffled, reengaging late, and flattening out in the stretch drive. The Grazen colt was a sharp second to two-back versus similar and gets Hernandez for today’s return mount. 6-Catmansue returned to his winning ways when switching back to dirt on Aug. 22 and now goes first off the claim for Team O’Neill. This jockey-trainer combo is 3 for 11 (27%) with recent acquisitions at Del Mar, and the colt sports the field’s best last-out dirt Beyer (83). 8-Jarama flashed speed and tired over this strip on July 18, but makes his first start since the Peter Miller claim and his third start of the form cycle. This barn had a pair of double-digit winners on Labor Day Monday.

Race #11: Selections 12-7-1

The D’Amato-trained 12-Thebestisyettobe (Ire) faces a tough post to negotiate, but boasts the strongest late pace figures in the field, in a race that’s projected to have lively splits. The 5-year-old mare has two wins and a second since returning off the extended layoff. 7-Word Play has been on a tear for Mullins since March and exits back-to-back decisive wins against softer starter allowance rivals. 1-Beets has not been out in roughly 11 months but has been training sharply for Michael McCarthy and has proven she can fire fresh. The 4-year-old filly by More Than Ready gets a cozy inside draw for her return try and figures to trip out favorably.
