Europe & Australia Weekend Preview – by Steven Bonnick

A fine weekend of racing, with the highlight being British Champions Day. You can read my preview of the card here: https://inthemoneypodcast.com/british-champions-day-preview-by-steven-bonnick/

There has been much debate on social media about the best horse in the world recently with Ombudsman heading the official rated best but many suggesting that the remarkable Ka Ying Rising should head the rankings.

Both run this weekend with the latter a relative big price by his standards at 8/15 for the Everest Stakes (06:15 AM Saturday) at Randwick having gone off at the shortest possible Tote price of 1/20 on his last seven starts. This gelding has swept all before him in his native Hong Kong, with his current win stretching to 21. He scored in breath-taking fashion last time out, clocking 66.11 seconds for six furlongs (with no run up) and looks to add another $4.5m to his career total of $19.7m. The rain they’ve had in Australia may not be ideal -and the home sprinters are generally considered the strongest on the planet – so going back-to-back in this race not be easy for this superstar, with the likes of Tempted (who’s won his last 5) to beat.

It’s relatively low-key stuff back in Europe outside of Ascot, but we should see a good 2-year-old emerge at Leopardstown. Wall Steet could be that and he’s odds-on in the Eyrefield Stakes(15:07) on Saturday having made a very nice debut.

Trean heads the betting later on on the card in the Killavullan Stakes (16:15). He’s finally started to fulfil his debut promise and landed a big Sales race pot last time out. He faces two Aidan O’Brien horses in the shape of Capability Brown, who looked a stayer when winning over 2 furlongs further on heavy last time out, and Bengal Tiger, who is improving rapidly and really impressed me when storming clear in a Maidan at Naas last time out.

The Trigo Stakes (15:42) is run at the same venue on Sunday with the unbeaten Come What May looking to build on an impressive debut effort. This stoutly-bred son of Nathaniel is a half-brother to a Derby winner and has had his debut form franked – he could be anything.

Horse To Watch

Best Secret is a proper tool on soft ground and looks to have been found a winning opportunity in the Prix du Conseil de Paris (14:50) at Longchamp this Sunday. He can win at the top level when the mud is flying and should have more than enough to take care of these.
