On the Horizon – Gulfstream Park – Thursday(January 27, 2022) – John Pinder

Early Pick 5 sequence:

Race 1 SELECTIONS:   9 – 7

#9 Flatbush is dropping in class and distance for trainer Fernando Abreu.  In a few of his races he has flashed good early speed but tired.   Jockey Paco Lopez will place this one on or near the lead, coupled with the cutback in distance and the addition of Lasix, we should anticipate improvement.  #7 Fran’s Strike was claimed after his debut start which makes this 3-year-old eye catching.  After a deeper look it seems that trainer Amador Sanchez does well with first off the claim runners as well as those getting Lasix for the first time.  Running back at the same level and distance we will see what a little experience and the new barn does for this son of Summer Front.

Race 2 SELECTION:   5 – 1

#5 Mr Tito’s is a closer that will make his first start for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.  He was claimed last time out and is running at the next level for a barn that does well with winners of their last race and first after the claim runners.  This gelding is in excellent form and will be a short price but is one that you cannot leave off the ticket.  #1 Chucky fits solidly at this level.  Trainer Jorge Delgado has been campaigning this gelding in or around this claiming price level for the past seven months and has been very successful.  Last time out he placed this Arindel homebred in an optional claiming race and he was unable to keep up, even so the speed figure was not bad.  Today he is placed in that bread-and-butter range and should be in contention for the victory.

Race 3 SELECTIONS:   2 – 8

#2 Magic Pro was well bet in his debut and was claimed by new trainer Joseph Orseno.  In his only start he showed good early speed going 6F before tiring and finishing third, today he gets Lasix for the first time and will cut back in distance to 5F.  #8 Sloe Gin Biz ships in from Charles Town for trainer Claudio Gonzalez. Gonzalez statistically does well with shippers and yesterday we saw a runner from Charles Town win on the synthetic.  This gelding has good early pace tactics and is returning to the maiden claiming level.

Race 4 SELECTIONS:   2 – 3

#2 Aunt Naughty is a well-bred daughter of Blame out of an A.P. Indy Dam; today she will be making her third lifetime start for trainer Shug McGaughey.  Stretching out in distance and getting Lasix for the second time, we can anticipate a continued improvement from this lightly raced homebred.  #3 Confidenceinterval also fits the mold of a well-bred filly trained by a high-profile trainer.  Confidenceinterval is a daughter of Union Rags and is trained by Chad Brown.  In her only start she ran 6F at this class level finishing a respectable third, today she is stretching out to the route distance of a mile and a sixteenth and retains the services of jockey Tyler Gaffalione.

Race 5 SELECTIONS:   2 – 4

#2 Harper’s in Charge will make her eighth lifetime start today for trainer Christophe Clement.  Last time out was her first time at Gulfstream Park and today will be second off the layoff for a patient trainer that is adding blinkers to this already speedy runner.  #4 Simply the Best broke her maiden last time out but that was over 10 months ago.  This well-bred filly is a speedy daughter of Constitution and has some of the best connections in the business in trainer Danny Gargan and jockey Irad Ortiz; but maybe due to the long layoff maybe she goes off at a decent price.
