On the Horizon – Gulfstream Park – Wednesday(January 12, 2022) – John Pinder

Early Pick 5 sequence:

Race 1 SELECTIONS:   7 – 2 – 9

#7 Mr Mac Quhae has had a bit of seconditis lately, but son of Classic Empire gets Lasix for the first time and could improve.  He has the most experience and he has posted the fastest speed figure among today’s starters; Leonel Reyes in the irons.  #2 Canaan has been away from the races since July of last year and returns with a new trainer. He will be competing a much lower level than his debut in which he showed adequate speed in the first half of the race before giving way.  #9 Send D Package is a first time starter for trainer Mark Passley.  The horses’ Dam has 3 winners from 3 starters.

Race 2 SELECTIONS:  7 – 6

# 7 Cozy Cafe will be making her second start after a layoff, for trainer Victor Barboza Jr. who has a solid 15%-win percentage in that statistical category.  This mare is stretching out from 6F to 8F, which should complement her well as she does her best running late.  #6 Gaga Oh La La is owned and trained by Saul Matos, who doesn’t run a large number of horses but places them well.  This 4-year-old filly got off to a slow start last time and gets blinkers today.   She has the ability to press the pace and sustain which would be optimal in a spot like this.

Race 3 SELECTIONS:   5 – 6

#5 Proud Contender returns to the races after a 2 month for trainer Fernando Abreu.  In majority his races – he wore blinkers, last time out he did not, today blinkers go back on.  In a race where many of the speed horses have not shown the ability to hold on for win, this 4 year-old colt should have good opportunity for the win.  #6 Starlite Walker is a first time starter for trainer David Fawkes.  Has been putting up good workout in the AM; gets top jockey Luis Saez in the saddle.

Race 4 SELECTIONS:   1 – 7

#1 Foxtrot Seville is making her first start for trainer Michael Trombetta, who has an impressive 21%-win percentage with horses that make their first start for his barn.  This filly is also dropping in class and should be competitive as she tries the tapeta surface for the first time.  #7 Dreaming of Audrey is making her second start off the layoff.  In her last race she ran just fine versus similar, improvement should be imminent.

Race 5 SELECTIONS:   7 – 8 – 3

#7 Devoted Kitten showed two races back that he does have the propensity to handle the surface. Trainer Jorge Delgado is off to a red hot start to the meet and will look to continue with this runner who drops in and class and gets one the top jockeys in Irad Ortiz.  #8 Diligent is a hard trying gelding that is making his second start of the layoff.  Last time out he won at a level slightly below today’s contest at the same distance over the All-Whether surface.  #3 Outshine was claimed in his last race and will make his claim repeater appearance for trainer Amador Sanchez.  Sanchez is off to a great start for the Gulfstream championship meet
