Early Pick 5 sequence:
Race 1 SELECTIONS: 5 – 1 – 8
#5 California Frolic has posted the highest speed figure of any runner in the field; he is also getting Lasix for the first time and is dropping in class today after winning last time out. This son of California Chrome does his best running late but doesn’t like to be too far out of it either. He is 2-2 over the surface and retains the services of jockey Junior Alvarado. #1 Tang is a 3-year-old young colt, sired by Candy Ride, that has a lot of upside. Not only did he win his debut, going a mile and a sixteenth race on the synthetic, he was also claimed. His time was good but not earth-shattering, but he was professional and took care of business. 10-1 on the morning line seems like an overlay, even with the step up in class. #8 Doctor Nash is making his 3-year-old debut for trainer Michael A Tomlinson. This well-bred son of Practical Joke has shown good early speed as a 2-year-old and should be well placed early and if he takes to the All-Weather, he could be dangerous.
Race 2 SELECTIONS: 4 – 3
#4 El Pecado should be very prominently placed in this spot, as many of the other runners are unproven over the surface or like to come from off the pace. This 4-year-old is trained and owned by Ronald Abrams and has been very competitive at this level. #3 No Drama is attempting the synthetic surface for the first time but has shown good versatility on the turf. This gelding is dropping in class and will also be making his third start off the layoff for trainer Bobby Dibona, who is solid statistically with those categories.
Race 3 SELECTIONS: 4 – 2
#4 Shawnee Princess is a 5-year-old homebred that made her debut one month weeks ago, in which she set very good fractions to run second; retains the services of Tyler Gaffalione. #2 Testimonial is eligible to improve as she is making her second start of the layoff for trainer Kelly Breen. Last time out he was well-place early but had no kick in the lane.
Race 4 SELECTIONS: 5 – 3 – 2
#5 Fifth Anniversary ran against solid company during her 2-year-old campaign up at Woodbine last year; she now makes her Gulfstream Park debut for new trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. Based on her morning workout times she seems ready to get back to the track in the afternoons, and should be competitive in this spot. #3 Bali Del Sol is a homebred for Calumet Farm who makes her 3-year-old debut for trainer Rusty Arnold. She gets Lasix for the first time after competing against a higher level last time out. #2 Li Li Bear hasn’t quite found her niche yet but she has somethings going in her favor that should allow her to turn the corner today. She is second off the layoff for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. She is also getting back to a sprint distance and Luis Saez is scheduled to ride.
Race 5 SELECTIONS: 3 – 4 – 9
#3 My Philly Twirl is making her second lifetime start for trainer Brendan Walsh and is getting Lasix for the first time. On debut this daughter of Hard Spun showed promise as she sat a good trip off the speed before tiring in the stretch. #4 Pharoah’s Song is a first-time starter for turf wizard trainer Chad Brown. This daughter of American Pharoah has been putting up good workout times and will be ridden by Tyler Gaffalione; I also think that the inside draw should help this unraced filly. #9 Lemon Red is another runner in this race for trainer Chad Brown that should not be overlooked. This first-time starter is a home bred for Doheny Racing Stable and Partners and is out of Lemon Drop Kid; gets Javier Castellano in the irons.
