Players’ Podcast–March 1, 2021–The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

We start the show with a visit from Nick Luck as he and PTF try to make sense of the awful story coming out of Ireland about trainer Gordon Elliott.

Then JK is here to review a bevy (fun word) of stakes races at Gulfstream Park and Oaklawn, with thoughts on the Kentucky Oaks trail, Pass the Champagne, Greatest Honor, Mystic Guide, Essential Quality, Monomoy Girl and more.

  • In terms of MG I am getting vibes of Zenyattas final year. We all thought it would be her going out west to contest the jockey club gold cup, the Whitney etc. but their owners went sadly super conservative with her until the breeders cup classic. she just kept pounding the same three or four horse filly/mare fields in Southern California for the whole year. it was such a shame. She could’ve even improved her already incredible legacy but it was not meant to be. This is why I forever will appreciate the owners of Rachel Alexandra doing such an incredible, never to be repeated again year that she had winning all those races against the boys. I hope we get at least one race with MG vs the males but this ownership group seems too conservative to try ☹️

    • I can argue it either way. I agree RA was amazing stuff, but she was also never the same after the Woodward. And I think I can argue Z was as good as she was for as long BECAUSE she was handled so lightly. I think with the my racehorse connection it makes sense for them to go for a conservative, undefeated season to generate interest in their innovative product. But as a fan I am so with you — would love to see a more ambitious plan.
