Preakness 145 Undercard

Another great day of racing await horseplayers this weekend.  The final leg of the triple crown is race 11 from Pimlico on Saturday, and you probably all set for the main race.  Listed below are the undercard races, which are highly competitive, accompanied by summaries with few thoughts that can hopefully assist you in making the day enjoyable from start to finish.

Race 1  1 mile & 1/16 (Turf) SelimaB150K

Things start off with lightly raced young ladies on the turf going a route for their second or third race; lots of potential here.

#2 Golden Voice ran her competition off their feet last time out.  Speed on turf can be a very valuable weapon especially in a large field like today’s opener.

#3 Invincible Gal won impressively at 5 1/2 F in her first race with Johnny V aboard, gets him again today going a longer.

#7 Line Dancing showed her ability to sit off a decent pace and close well.  At first asking that shows something special.

Race 2  1 mile & 1/16 (Turf) Galorett-G3

#1 Juliet Foxtrot looks to take this one on the front end. Second off the layoff she is projected to go to the front and has the back class to get the job done.

#3 She’sonthewarpath has been on the war path at or around the 100K level.  Steps up in class today and will the other girls in this race a run for their money.

#6 Storm the Hill is capable of being winning or at least hitting the board at a decent price.  In her most recent attempts at routes she has run into really fast paces upfront.  Coming off a long layoff for a new barn, getting back to routes, going another 1/2F, are all factors that I think can help her be better than what she looks like at first glance.

Race 3  6 Furlongs. SkipatL100K

#1 Chalon should get the opportunity to bounce back after running a good second at Laurel last time after stumbling at the start.

#5 Bye Bye J returns to the level she shown to be very tuff at.

#6 Bronx Beauty has been very competitive at this level my one question mark is will Paco Lopez be patient enough with his ride.  In her best races she been allowed to come from right off the the speed.

Race 4  1 Mile. (Turf) HilltopB100K

This should a very competitive race – there are two horses that I will play against based on pace and projected public perception.  Two of the factors that I use often to help to find value and break some eggs; can’t play them all right?  #3 Caravel is undefeated her in three starts at 5F and 6F she will go to the front along with the #5 Evil Lyn.  Both are capable of winning but I will be looking for a presser to take this one.

#2 Chart has the tactical running style and ability to sit off and have enough to win.

#6 Secret Time ships in for Arnold Delacour and could get firm turf for the 1st time.

#9 Princess Grace is undefeated in her two starts both on the turf.  What I really like about her is her closing pace figures, should get a good setup.

#10 Shimmering ships in for Graham Motion and gets Johnny V in the saddle. – based on those two factors alone, this filly deserves a look.

Race 5  6 Furlongs.  MsPrekns-G3

#1 Ain’t No Elmers last race was very impressive off a little bit of a freshening.  If she continues to improve will be very competitive in this spot.

#4 Sound Machine is a must use.  I hoping that the betting public looks at her last race and moves on, because that was off a long lay off.  Although at a slightly lower level, prior to that she had form and numbers that would fit right in here.

#5  Mundaye Call has put up monster numbers in her races two and three back.  Looks like she is a need the lead type because in her most recent start in a G2 she tired after being headed or maybe she had a bad day.  In here she looks to be early controlling speed other than the #3 horse (which I don’t believe can hang around to win).  She is a Go or No Go for me  – I would have her on my multi-race tickets, but will also watch the tote board to determine if any value can be had for the race itself.

Race 6  1 mile & 1/16 (Turf) DinnrPty-G2

#3 Hembree has the ability to come from off the pace with a BIG late kick, he very well could have the opportunity to come flying late and take it all in the final strides.

#7 Factor This having draw the outside post position will have the afterburners on from start to finish.  He has show the agility to maintain a high cruising speed for this distance and longer.

Race 7  6 Furlongs. DeFrncsM-G3

One of the races where I am going to try and be against one of the best runners in the field, only because he his better going longer – but can definitely get the job done. – #7 Stan the Man.

#3 Eastern Bay – has versatile running style and should be around 4 – 1 on the tote in my estimation.

#5 Landeskog – is as game as they come, his only off the board finish was against G1 company going the tricky distance of 7F.  Won’t offer a lot of value but is one that you can lean on heavily.

Race 8  1 mile & 1/16 (Turf) LRLFutrtyB150K

This a competitive race of lightly raced 2 year olds going a route on the turf. – A few of them stand out from a speed figure perspective but its a race where you can typically find overlays – Let’s do it!  The pace looks to be reasonable so many times you can find a youngster that has a early turn of foot on or near the lead that will stay on.

#1 Pivotal Mission showed the ability last time out to get to the front and was a solid second only by a 1/2 a length. His speed figures are slightly below some of the other potentials in here, gets the services of Johnny V once again.

#3 Wootton Asset is shipping to the US for the 1st time for Motion – a definite angle to be aware of.  The probability of his being close to the front is increased greatly and with Paco in the irons.

#4 Kidnapped is stretching out from 5 1/2 and trying the turf for the 1st time has a good trainer and jockey – could be a contender.

#6 Arrest Me Red won for fun his first time going 5 1/2 on the turf with a top figure.

Race 9   1 Mile. (Turf) JWMurphyL100K

This should be an interesting race with a big full field  of 14 scheduled on the turf.  I project them to be moving at moderate to fast clip early, setting up well for a presser or closer coming from close off the pace to get the victory.

#6 Jolting Joe last time out was a against much tougher going longer and they crawled on the front end, taking away his best shot at doing well; today should be much different.

#10 Don Juan Kitten fits really well in here and should get the opportunity to pounce.

#11 Buy Land and See is returning to a route third off the layoff and put up solid numbers as a 2 year old.

#13 Bye Bye Melvin disappointed in his last race but it was over soft turf against G3 company.  If he gets the projected pace good and trip he could pass them all and hit the wire first.

Race 10  1 mile & 1/8 G2 Black-Eyed Susan S

#1 Project Whiskey some people play numbers; I will give consideration to a horse with the name of my favorite drink of choice. – jk jk Okay only half kidding 🙂  This filly has shown in races other than her last that she can be competitive in graded stakes company and has enough speed to position well into the first turn and taker her speed all the way around.

#5 Bonny South ran a really big race in the G1 Alabama only problem was she was chasing the super filly Swiss Skydiver.  Won’t be big price on the board but could very well be a single play.

# 8 Hopeful Growth is a filly that ran a big race two back in the G3 Monmouth Oaks at a mile and sixteenth, then she did not finish up well at all in the G1 Kentucky Oaks going a mile and fourth.  Was it because level of competition was too great that day or she didn’t like the distance?  I am going to give her another shot in here.

Let’s make it happen!!!
