Santa Anita (Friday-5/27/22)

Analysis & Selections By: Dean Keppler @Keppskorner

BEST BET: 1-Superman Shaq (Race #4)

Race #1: 3-Leisurewear has not been out in 6 months, but barn is a strong 4 for 11 (36%) with horses returning off >180 Days in MDSW events the past two years at Santa Anita. The filly’s best effort was the one prior to going on the sidelines. A solid worktab for return. 1-Secret Fix has good positional speed; the rail and goes dirt to turf for trainer Shelbe Ruis. Although the sample is small, this barn is 2 for 6 (33%) with a lofty $6.53 ROI with the surface change. The 4-year-old filly is by multiple G1 winner Secret Circle who gets 22% with turf sprint runners. 2-Snark cuts back to a sprint where she’s run back-to-back runner-up efforts with identical (70) Beyer numbers.

Selections: 3-1-2

Race #2: 1-Ardis stretches back out today and removes the blinkers. This filly ran par for this level at this trip three-back when attempting to go wire-to-wire and settling for 2nd. She gets in light this afternoon with 7 lb. apprentice and could work out a favorable trip from the rail. 4-So Softly a beaten favorite in last but takes a sizable class drop today and has four decent works since 3rd place finish on April 10. 5-Harddiane is wheeled back on 3 weeks rest but has been consistently competitive at this level.

Selections: 1-4-5

Race #3: 1-Dancing Dana moves inside; has improving turf Beyer numbers with today being the 3rd start off the bench; and was a sharp winner two-back with Hernandez onboard. 2-Del Mar Drama defeated a pair of these including our top pick April 30 with solid 2nd place finish. 6-On Purpose is winless since October 2020 but has speed; is drawn outside and goes out for top turf barn.

Selections: 1-2-6

Race #4: 1-Superman Shaq has been freshened for new conditioner who is a strong 3 for 7 (43%) with $7.28 ROI with horses returning off >180 Days. The 4-year-old gelding takes a sizable class drop and has worked sharply for return. 4-Big Scott Daddy goes 2nd off the claim for trainer Jonathon Wong and returns to Santa Anita where he just missed by a neck two-back against weaker. The 6-year-old gelding fits well here on Beyer speed figures. The speedster 5-Catbernay was a beaten favorite in last but goes first off the claim today for trainer Milton Pineda. This barn is, however, 0 for 7 with new acquisitions at SA.

Selections: 1-4-5

Race #5: 2-Proud Pedro returns off the layoff as a first-time gelding for trainer Leonard Powell at a reduced claiming level. This gelding has done well off the bench in prior starts and this shrewd turf barn has solid numbers overall with returnees. He’s the overwhelming class of this field IF physically right. 1-War Treaty has not been seen since December 2020 but makes first start in the Cerin barn whose had prior success with these long layoff types. This 6-year-old was stakes-placed on the grass out east at Monmouth Park back in 2019. Whether he can regain that same speed and form, however, remains to be seen. He’ll likely be sent with the rail draw today. 3-Frontier Market is on the improve for Sadler with a wide closing 3rd in last.

Selections: 2-1-3

Race #6: First time gelding 5-Divine Armour is in for a $50k claiming tag today after three decent efforts with strong figures to boot for trainer John Sadler. The 5-year-old gelding is 0 for 10 at Santa Anita but projects to get a favorable stalking trip today from the outside and this appears to be a winning spot. 4-Papale was a strong second off the extended layoff and is a BIG threat with any normal second-out improvement. The 4-year-old gelding has come back to work 4 times since that encouraging try. 2-All Four Winds a sharp wire-to-wire Maiden winner of last with (85) Beyer when switched to main track, and likely front runner again today on the stretch-out while meeting winners for the first time.

Selections: 5-4-2

Race #7: 6-Ready Jet Go has speed and removes the blinkers today. This 4-year-old filly by More than Ready has shown she’s capable of sitting and pouncing from off the pace. That seems like a preferred strategy this afternoon with other speed-types signed on. Beaten favorite 5-Gritty Girl has good gate speed; takes a sizable class drop for Mullins and should be tough to catch cutting back to 5 furlongs. Another class dropper 4-Tapit Doux goes route to sprint today and adds blinkers. A strong 3-furlong “best of 28” blowout for this on May 14 indicates her readiness.

Selections: 6-5-4

Race #8: 5-Vanisky returned off the mini-freshening with a decent 2nd behind recent Maiden winner Arthur Spooner who was an unfortunate 2/1 gate scratch last week. Another move forward makes the colt a contender here. 8-Hotride Ride deserves another chance against claimers in career start number three and 2nd start over the main track. A wide 3rd against a couple of these in most recent start. 2-Poseidon’s Kid co-tops the field’s best last-out Beyer (63) in last and gets in light once again.

Selections: 5-8-2

Race #9: 1-For the Good Times stretches out off troubled trip from same rail slot May 1. The 4-year-old filly by Empire Maker deserves another chance to redeem herself reuniting with winning Maiden rider who returns west after failed Kentucky riding trial experiment. Recent wire-to-wire Maiden winner 2-Ghostem looks to make it two straight facing winners. She appears to have caught a field lacking any serious early zip which should help her chances. 3-Witch Moon move inside and has the strongest late kick of this group of fillies and mares. She only needs a lively pace to close into. She may not get that today, however. Nonetheless she’ll be running late for winning barn.

Selections: 1-2-3
