BEST BET: 3-Worse Read Sanchez (Race #3)
Race #1: 3-She’s A Joker is by multiple G1 winner Practical Joke who gets 18% winners with 3 yo & up debut runners according to DRF Formulator. Trainer Ruben Alvarado is 4 for 8 (50%) with a $5.02 ROI with FTS the past 2 years. She’s working well and is bred for turf on the dam side. 8-Queen of Pompeii holds the experience edge over most of these fillies but has been sidelined for 9 months. The 4-year-old has trained well for return; removes the blinkers today and attracts top rider. 7-Applaud the Bench adds blinkers off the layoff for top barn. She’s by multiple G1 turf winner Acclamation.
Race #2: 5-Back Ring Luck appears to have good speed in a pace-less event and goes 2nd off the claim today. The 4-year-old gelding is 4 for 5 at this trip. 2-Divine Armor is winless since September 2020 but has run back-to-back strong races for this level. The other Sadler runner 1-Spirit Maker has never tried the main track in eight career starts but makes the switch today. The barn is 10 for 29 (34%) the past 2 years going turf to dirt.
Race #3: 3-Worse Read Sanchez should benefit from an expected live race flow today for Gutierrez and O’Neil. 6-Bally’s Charm has good gate speed and was a decent 3rd at this level in most recent effort. The gelding gets 2nd time Lasix today. 4-Rocky Gibraltar stretches out today with improving Turf Beyers.
Race #4: Beaten favorite Baffert transplant 2-Kerouac makes first start for McCarthy and should be on the lead today. Perhaps the son of Uncle Mo rebounds for new connections. 6-Piroli has strung together back-to-back runner-up finishes and is a logical win threat. 7-Union Train adds Lasix and returns off the freshening for Sheriffs. The colt showed promise last fall.
Race #5: 8-Spring Spinning makes first start for new barn off encouraging debut behind next-out winning filly Aventapp. She stretches out today and attracts top turf pilot. 3-Unfaithful Ways has improving grass Beyers and goes 2nd off the claim today for Baltas and Bravo. This conditioner is 5 for 15 (33%) with this claiming angle at SA on grass. The other Baltas filly 7-The Ginger Queen is a logical choice with back-to-back runner-up finishes in last pair.
Race #6: 7-Bossy Soul goes 2nd off the claim today and returns to the main track where she’s been competitive. 9-Take a Leap is in great form right now and makes first start for Wong off the claim. This barn typically has strong stats with new acquisitions in Northern California but are 0 for 14 at Santa Anita. 3-Hot On the Trail adds blinkers and stretches back out looking for some form reversal.
Race #7: 2-Thrump’s Dream moves up off sharp win and should get another live pace to close into today for Baltas. 5-New Heat closed strongly for 2nd in most recent effort earning the field’s best last-out turf Beyer (86). A fast projected pace only enhances her chances. The other Baltas filly 3-Carpe Vinum cuts back to a mile and drops out of the Grade 3 Santa Ana for D’Amato.
Race #8: 2-Gerlach’s has been a popular commodity at the claiming box and now makes first start for Hess barn off sharp win. He’s 1 for 1 at 7 furlongs. 8-Scary Fast Smile beaten favorite in last but projects to trip out nicely today from a stalking position. Big win two-back in fast time. 9-Big Flame goes turf to dirt and second off the claim for Miyadi.
Race #9: 10-Current Mood ran well in March 19 debut. The filly was forced to steady a couple times with inside draw and then ran on well when finally finding some decent daylight in the stretch run. She was a bit sideways and green but finished on sharply. Improvement likely in second career start. 4-Busker Allie improving Beyer turf figures and finished behind next-out winner Barrister’s Ride. She cuts back to a sprint this afternoon. 11-Roubaix is drawn outside with speed and comes off a decent runner-up try.
