The Shipping Forecast – Del Mar – 9/3/22

Course: Del Mar

Race: Race 5

Horse: Chicago Soldier

Trainer/Jockey: Mark Glatt – Mike Smith

Breeding: 3-year-old colt; Declaration Of War – Storybook (Halling)

Previously trained by Johnny Murtagh. A maiden from six starts, Chicago Soldier may not have a win to his name, but he has shown above average ability on several occasions. He ran extremely well on debut, going down by just a neck despite greenness, and was quickly sent into Stakes company, finding the rise in class too much. Two placed efforts back in maiden company followed, before once again moving up in grade, unable to figure and finishing last of five in a Group 2. His most recent run was a flop in a big field, and he hasn’t been since that effort, which was way back in October 2021. On the plus side, he has a nice pedigree to have improved in his time off the track and his trainer has good numbers off a lay-off and with first-time Lasix. Mike Smith catches the eye as a jockey booking, he has some tactical speed and connections have found him a pretty winnable race here. We think he can run to a Beyer of around 80, which should see him go pretty close here.
