BC F&M Sprint

1 – Speech (6-1)

09-04-20

Trip Note:  This was a rough trip and is deserving of a pass.  Was pushed inward at the start from the eventual place finisher, ‘Swiss Skydiver.’  This made her mad and she immediately became tough to handle.  Raced keenly into the first turn while 3+W.  On the backstretch run she was now relaxed, but she received a tactical error by her rider.  When a horse that was in front of her raced wide, her jock took the bait and advanced inside of that one while approaching the far turn.  It didn’t take long after that for her to get shuffled and lose all hope.  She grinded away the last 5/16 of a mile, but truly was without any real chance.  Let’s give her a pass.

Race Note:  The place finisher of this race was a next-out winner in the Preakness Stakes.

Bias:  N/A

Summary:  Excused (+)

2 – Gamine (7-5)

08-08-20

Trip Note:  Took command from the start and was immediately put on hold to rate.  The filly to her outside was a bit keen and being restrained.  These (2) set slow fractions down the backstretch and then stretched out the field in the far turn.  ‘Gamine’ easily pulled when it mattered.  Ignore the comment in the PP’s about this one being ridden out – it’s stupid.  The comment should read, “Easily,” as she wasn’t ridden much in the lane.

Race Note:  The pace was slow and the top 2 choices dominated, running 1-2 throughout.

Bias: N/A

3 – Come Dancing (8-1)

09-06-20

Trip Note:  Raced in midpack early while claiming and inward path.  Grinded away the last ¼ mile, taking full advantage of a wide, in BTW path in the stretch when the leader drifted very wide in the lane.  A good effort but also a trip that had some very good racing luck.

Race Note:  The pace was fast.

Bias:  N/A

Summary:  Good trip (-)

4 – Inthemidstofbiz (30-1)

10-03-20

Trip Note:  Stalked the early pace from a clear, outside position throughout.  Was running strongly into the far turn and so this one’s rider decided to engage the lead early.  Easily disposed of the pace setter and kicked clear, holding sway in the lane.   This was a very trip and an equally strong performance.

Race Note:  The pace seemed honest and outside of the early leader (that ran terrible), speed easily held up.  2-3-4 early finished 3-1-2.

Bias:  N/A

5 – Sconsin (20-1)

09-04-20

Trip Note: This was a dream trip.  Lagged at the back while the 4-5* and the 1-1 second choice hooked 4-5L clear early.  Saved ground through the far turn (ignore the 4W comment – it’s deceiving) and had a perfect slingshot off the turn into the stretch.  Rallied past very tired fillies in the lane for the win.

Race Note:  The top (2) choices in here dueled throughout and set the race up for all ‘off the pace’ types.

Bias:  N/A

Summary:  Perfect trip (- -)

6 – Venetian Harbor (8-1)

10-17-20

Trip Note:  This was a great lone speed trip throughout.  Held a clear and uncontested lead down the backstretch while rating kindly.  Ran OK through the lane, but tired late and was saved by the finish line.  This was a great trip on the lead, but this was also likely a stepping stone for the Breeders’ Cup, so maybe she doesn’t deserve to be beaten up too badly.

Race Note:  The pace was on the slower side and speed types easily held up.  The place finisher barely missed the win from off the pace and was obviously best in consideration of the pace.

7 – Serengeti Empress (3-1)

09-05-20

Trip Note:  Fought off the presser while setting blistering fractions.  Fought off the stalker.  Re-broke right near the finish to almost fight off a deep closer who had enjoyed a perfect trip – and then actually galloped out in front of the winner!  Wow – what a gutsy performance!

Race Note:  This pace was beyond hot!  The last (3) horses early finished 1-3-4.  The place finisher was best by a city block!

Bias:  N/A

8 – Sally’s Curlin (20-1)

09-05-20

Trip Note:  Was allowed to lag far back and make her customary big, late run. Claimed third from a tired and discouraged runner right on the line while never coming close to threatening the top (2).  Will need to improve.

Race Note:  This pace was beyond hot!  The last (3) horses early finished 1-3-4.  The place finisher was best by a city block!

Bias:  N/A

Summary:  Good trip (-)

Bias:  N/A

9 – Bell’s the One (6-1)

09-05-20

Trip Note:  A dream trip!  Had about 7L of open air down the backstretch.  Advanced in the turn and got closer and closer as the main pack started to tire.  Eased out late in teh turn and had a clear shot in the lane, just getting up for the win.  Took advantage of a dream set up.

Race Note:  This pace was beyond hot!  The last (3) horses early finished 1-3-4.  The place finisher was best by a city block!

Bias: N/A

Summary:  Perfect trip (- -)

BC Turf Sprint

1 – Big Runnuer (12-1)

09-25-20

Trip Note: Was away just OK and then showed huge speed to clear easily.  Ran a monster quarter in the turn and pretty much bottomed out the field.  This one’s rider knew he had the race won and merely threatened ‘Runnuer’ with a right handed whip throughout the stretch.  This was a good trip up front and an equally strong performance.

Race Note:  The rails position was at 10 feet.

Bias:  N/A

2 – Just Might (30-1)

Trip Note:  The PP’s tell the story correctly.  Raced unpressured throughout and held on OK in the stretch.

Race Note:  The run-up was 120 feet and the rail position was at 0 feet.  Speed dominated in this race.  The top (3) finishers were the tracker, the pocket sitter and the pace setter.

Bias:  N/A

Summary:  Good trip (-)

3 – Imprimis (4-1)

Trip Note:  This was a very good trip overall.  Broke well and showed good speed early.  When a few early movers fanned out wide, this one sat right behind a wall that was ‘fanning out wide.’  The jock remained patient, saving ground through the turn while remaining on hold, and then tipped out for the last 3/16 of a mile.  Barely got up.  This was a good run but an even better trip.

Race Note:  The run-up was 184 feet in this race and the rails were at 0 feet.

Bias: N/A

Summary:  Good trip (-)

4 – Front Run the Fed (12-1)

Trip Note:  Was off just a hair slow.  Ridden early to earn a midpack position.  After about 3/16 of a mile, this one left a cozy rail position for higher ground.  Race 4-5W the last ½ mile, fighting hard to maintain a steady advance while in BTW horses.  Gamely chased and just missed, getting run over by an outside runner in the late stages.  This was not the easiest of trips and is deserving of some love.

Race Note:  The run-up was 184 feet in this race and the rails were at 0 feet.

Bias: N/A

5 – Wet Your Whistle (15-1)

Trip Note:  Boy was this an interesting race!  When a loose horse took off to lead the pack, the early pace setter took back to avoid dueling with a riderless horse.  When that foe took back, ‘Wet Your Whistle’ took advantage, moving for the lead and claiming it easily.  The jockey of this ‘Wet Your Whistle’ had no issue with the riderless horse that was in front of the pack and to this one’s outside, and ‘Wet Your Whistle’ saw this riderless horse as competition.  In the stretch, you could see him trying hard to get to the ineligible runner, and by doing so, he had run away from the others.

Race Note:  The 3-1 third choice dropped his rider at the start.  The favorite and second favorite were both closers that were pace disadvantaged in this race.  The pace was slow and it should be noted that a riderless horse tripped the wire – so the fractions are likely slower than what shows up on paper.

Bias:  N/A

Summary:  Must read above (+)

6 – Glass Slippers (12-1)

Trip Note:   Was intermittently asked throughout the race.  It’s impressive that she stayed on to only get beat by a neck as it seemed she was consistently asked for more throughout.  Game run.

Race Note:  The field was quite compact and the top (3) finishers were all speed types.

Bias: N/A

7 – Leinster (4-1)

Trip Note:  Arrived dead fit off of the short break.  Tracked the pace throughout and never looked like a loser.  It did seem like a merry-go-round race (very little passing and no movement or passing).  Overall this was a very good trip and a good enough effort.

Race Note:  The run-up was 120 feet and the rail position was at 0 feet.  Speed dominated in this race.  The top (3) finishers were the tracker, the pocket sitter and the pace setter.

Bias:  N/A

Summary:  Good trip (-)

8 – Oleksandra (12-1)

Trip Note:  The bump at the start cost her some momentum when she broke from the gate – let’s say about 2 lengths.  Allowed to lag early, she began making her run outside of the 5/16 pole.  Advanced while easing outward late in the turn and fired a big shot in the lane to claim victory.  She had pace to run at which helped, but she also had some trouble away from the gate.  Overall I’d say that the trip leaned in her favor.

Race Note:  The run-up was 144 feet and the rail position at 18 feet.  The pace was fast/hot and closers ran 1-2-3.

Bias: N/A

9 – Into Mystic (12-1)

10-09-20

Trip:  Had a very good spot at the rail early, securing the pocket.  When the rail dueler began to get outrun, the jockey made the correct decision of leaving the rail, anticipating that runner to back up.  But what he didn’t see coming was that same runner getting clumsy when the far turn arrived and it cost ‘Mystic’ to shuffle.  She lost about 1 ½ lengths from this mild shuffle.  After this trouble, she athletically recovered, continuing to advance forward in the turn while being ridden with confidence.  She fired a nice shot in the lane, only to barely get tagged on the wire by a deep, classy runner in ‘Got Stormy.’  This was a tough beat as she would have won if not for the trouble headed into the far turn.

Race Note:  The pace was a dawdle early but the top two finishers in this one absolutely exploded the last ¼ mile.

Summary:  Best? (+)   Trouble not in the PP’s (+)

10 – Bombard (15-1)

09-12-20

Trip Note:  This was a strong run.  Got an aggressive ride to make the lead, and rated kindly in the early stages while measuring the lead. Was being chased by a wall of horses for the last ¼ mile and he fought all the way to the finish, galloping out well after having been defeated.  This was a game effort.

Race Note:  The run-up was 184 feet in this race and the rails were at 0 feet.

Bias: N/A

Summary:  Game (+)

10 – Wildman Jack (15-1)

Trip Note:  This was an unlucky trip and you could easily make the case that he was best.  Raced behind a WALL of 4 horses that were chasing the leader and had no chase but to wait his turn.  Began easing wide at about the 1//4 pole, moving 2-3-4-5+W into the stretch.  Fired a big shot in the lane despite lugging in when straightening out.  Really leveled well and accelerated nicely in the stretch.  An unlucky trip.

Race Note:  The rails position was at 10 feet.

Bias:  N/A

Summary:  Best? (+)

12 – Got Stormy (7-2)

Trip Note:  This was a confident rider as the rider didn’t do much until just inside the ¼ pole.  Was allowed to settle and move inward down the backstretch in order to save ground when the far turn arrived. Raced 2-3 paths wide in the turn.  Eased out in the lane and set down for the drive, she flew down the lane, switching leads twice and barely getting up for the score.  This is quite possibly a great prep while headed into the BC Turf Sprint as she really only ran hard for less than ¼ mile.

Race Note:  The run-up was 119 feet and the rail position was at 15 feet.

Bias:  N/A

13 – Texas Wedge (20-1)

Trip Note:  Overall this was a very good trip.  He advanced bravely through tight quarters in the turn, earning a pocket trip and clean shot in the lane, but…when you watch his gait closely over this yielding turf course, you’ll see that he didn’t get over the ground well.  When comparing this one to the winner, ‘Texas Wedge’s’ feet were glued to the course, whereas the winner was bouncing right over the course!  Considering this was likely a prep anyway, I wouldn’t put much weight into this finish.  This runner wants firm ground

Race Note:  N/A

Bias:  N/A

Summary:   Ignore race (+)
