Commandment – 2026 Kentucky Derby Contender Profile & Analysis

By Jackson Muniz

One could argue that Commandment has the best overall resume heading into this year’s Kentucky Derby. He’s undefeated in 2026 with all of those victories coming against stakes competition, and he leads the Kentucky Derby Points Standings with 150. His biggest victory came in the Florida Derby, probably the strongest field of the final prep races, when he won from off the pace to win by a nose. He also won the Fountain of Youth in stylish fashion back in March.

Pedigree and Connections

  • Sire: Into Mischief
  • Dam & Damsire: Sippican Harbor (by Orb)
  • Owner: Wathnan Racing
  • Trainer: Brad Cox
  • Jockey: Luis Saez

Obviously this horse’s pedigree has the Kentucky Derby written all over it. Superstar stallion Into Mischief has now sired three Kentucky Derby winners in Authentic, Mandaloun, and Sovereignty while the Dam Sire Orb was a Kentucky Derby winner himself. This horse is bred to get 10 furlongs all day

While Brad Cox technically does have a Kentucky Derby win in 2021 with Mandaloun, he’s still yet to cross the wire first on race day despite many of his starters racing well. Meanwhile, jockey Luis Saez is in the exact opposite position where he crossed the wire first in 2019 with Maximum Security, but was disqualified and is searching for his first official Derby win. Saez will get the mount on Commandment for the first time on the first Saturday in May. Both trainer and jockey are more than capable.

Final Prep Analysis

  • Final Prep Race: G1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park (March 28th)
  • Finish Position: 1st out of 6
  • Final Time: 1:49.99
  • Beyer Speed Figure: 100

I think it’s important to remember that the Florida Derby was/is regarded as the deepest Derby prep of the season when it featured 3 of the top 5(6?) betting choices in this year’s Kentucky Derby and Nearly, who was amongst the favorites at the time. I thought Commandment raced very well in victory. The pace was not fast and he sat in last for the first seven furlongs of that race. The Puma got a great trip and the jump on the field, while Chief Wallabee was also closer to the pace and got clear sailing in the stretch and had every chance to win that race if good enough. And yet, Commandment ran both of them down despite not getting much pace to chase. It was yet another impressive performance from the son of Into Mischief and his second straight race earning a triple-digit Beyer Speed Figure.

Strengths and Concerns

Strengths:

He is the only horse in the field to put together back to back 100+ Beyer speed figures, and he’s done it with two completely different pace scenarios.

He’s also one of the few closers in this field that actually had to navigate traffic/wait behind horses and still be successful. Other major contenders like Renegade, Further Ado, The Puma, and Chief Walabee have yet to prove they can be as effective sitting behind horses, and you don’t win the Derby by going 5-wide in the clear on both turns.

Concerns:

Does he get enough pace? It’s the Kentucky Derby so the pace will probably be at least honest, but I’m not sure it’ll be as quick as we’ve seen in recent years.

Why can’t he keep either of the country’s best jockeys? Maybe it is as simple as jockey politics with Irad staying with Repole/Pletcher and Prat sticking with Chad/Klaravich. But it’s still at least a little concerning that they’ve chosen horses that have a lesser chance on paper. Still, Luis Saez is more than a capable replacement.

Expert Opinions and Odds

It sure seems like Commandment is likely to go off as the third choice in this year’s Kentucky Derby and will likely be between 5-1 and 7-1. I’m floored that he’s going to be a higher price than Renegade, I believe his credentials are significantly stronger. He has a win over the racetrack, he’s faced far superior competition, he’s won with different pace scenarios, he’s proven he can navigate traffic in bigger fields, and he’s run much faster races. If this was just any other race, there’s no chance he would be a bigger price than Renegade so between the two closers that are likely to take money, I would much prefer Commandment.

Conclusion

Commandment has to be viewed as one of the major contenders in this year’s Kentucky Derby. He has all the credentials you’d hope to see in a Derby prospect and it doesn’t seem like he will be the favorite or even the second choice. With his running style, it shouldn’t matter what post he draws, he’ll just need to work out some kind of trip from the back of the pack.
