Analysis & Selections By: Dean Keppler @Keppskorner
BEST BET: 7-Hey Nay Nay (Race 3)
Race #1: Selections: 6-1-3
**There’s a $329,773 Pick Five Carryover**The Mark Glatt-trained 6-Call Me Sir is the lone 3-year-old in this field, but drops in class, switches to Hernandez this afternoon, and can improve in this softer spot. The gelding had a tough trip from an outside post in last. 1-Mr. Disrespectful moves back to turf on the stretch-out for trainer Craig Dollase after losing all chance when hopping at the start and unseating his rider two weeks ago. The 5-year-old gelding figures to be hustled along from the rail to the lead today, and both of his previous grass tries have been competitive for this level. 3-Cardiff Crack is a stone closer in a race that projects to have swift early splits, and the 6-year-old should be rallying strongly through the lane.
Race #2: Selections: 2-7-1
2-Little Raymond ran an OK, even fourth in his Aug. 2 grass debut for trainer Richard Baltas and now switches to the main track for career try number two. This lucrative jockey-trainer combo is 6-for-12 (50%) with a $4.22 ROI with dirt sprint starters the past four years, so improvement is likely. 7-Team Player ran a decent second in a short field in his Oct. 19 unveiling for conditioner Ryan Hanson and now shortens up to 5 ½ furlongs for start number two. His sire, Majestic Harbor, was a G1 winner going long, but there is enough sprint pedigree on his dam side. Kimura sticks. 1-Otto’s Magic is a logical fit based on his runner-up debut finish and the field’s best (77) main track Beyer back on Sept. 1 over next-out winner, Keithing Thunder. The Grazen gelding has trained steadily since that encouraging unveiling.
Race #3: Selections: 7-1-3
7-Hey Nay Nay (Ire) flashed speed and tired from a difficult outside post in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf a month ago, but now drops into a softer spot this afternoon for Sadler. The son of hot sire No Nay Never won the G3 Del Mar Juvenile Turf S. two back over a solid, robust field and figures to clear this field this afternoon with Prat, who has been on fire at Aqueduct in recent weeks. He’s a legitimate single for the Pick Five sequence. 1-Proton has a pair of wins and a runner-up finish in three career tries for trainer Graham Motion, and his grass Beyers have improved with each subsequent start. The gelded son of G1 winner Astern figures to trip out nicely from the fence with Hernandez. The Powell-trained 3-Caro Buono (Fr) is still looking for his first stateside victory, but was a troubled trip fifth with some traffic issues in his most recent effort in the TA Alliance S. on Oct. 31 behind Proton. The juvenile colt owns the best late pace figure in this field and should get an adequate pace to close into this afternoon.
Race #4: Selections: 4-3-6
Turf to dirt 4-Libel Proof scampered away to an impressive gate-to-wire five-furlong grass maiden debut score on Nov. 7 and should transition just fine to the main track. She is by Dialed In, 16% dirt sprinters. 3-My Kat is wheeled back on short rest, exiting a sharp gate-to-wire win on Nov. 23 for the Papaprodromou barn, who was atop of the trainer standings as of this writing. 6-Lino’s Angel was overmatched and outrun badly in the Golden State Juvenile Fillies S. on Halloween, but drops into a more realistic spot on the turnback.
Race #5: Selections: 7-4-1
7-Book Smart returns to the Del Mar grass course and shortens back up to his preferred five-furlong trip this afternoon for conditioner Bob Hess. The 7-time winning Stanford 6-year-old is the quickest of this group with an alert break and may prove tough to reel in late. 4-Yellow Card has run well in his last four consecutive turf sprint tries for trainer Michael McCarthy, and exits a career-best (99) Beyer with his downhill course runner-up finish in the Eddie D (G2) back on Sept. 27. The 4-year-old gelding is just as effective over this shorter trip over the main turf course. The multiple stakes-winning 1-Big City Lights has had a very successful career, racking up a solid 50%-win rate and 13-for-14 ITM, but has never tried grass. The Mandella-trained 6-year-old (by Mr. Big) has plenty of turf pedigree to suggest the surface switch is a good match and exits a better-than-looks eighth in the BC Sprint.
Race #6: Selections: 2-4-5
Trainer Bob Baffert sends out the one-two knockout punch of 2-Getaway Car and 4-Midland Money. The former is the Sunland Derby winner, Best Pal (G3) victor, and runner-up in the G1 American Pharoah. The son of Curlin has been freshened since his fourth-place finish in the Virginia Derby, adds Lasix today, and should fall into a favorable stalking trip with Prat. Midland Money makes his second try off the bench this afternoon, exiting a short-priced second on Oct. 26. The sophomore colt is quick enough to clear this field with Hernandez and one of two entrants that have posted triple-digit Beyers. 5-See Through It is 14-for-46 lifetime, and is in super form right now for trainer Genaro Vallejo, having won two straight at this 6 ½-furlong trip.
Race #7: Selections: 7-9-1
The Graham Motion-trained 7-Heredia (Ire) is a 7-time winner who has run very well since returning off an extended break and shipping stateside. The 6-year-old mare was a game gate-to-wire winner of the Yellow Ribbon (G2) over this turf course two back in the summer, and never had much of a chance when floated wide in a tough-trip sixth (beaten less than two lengths) at Keeneland in the G1 First Lady in her most recent try. She’s trained well in recent weeks and is reunited with Hernandez. This conditioner has won this race twice (Miss Temple City, 2016; Gypsy’s Warning, 2010). 9-Segesta is a multiple Graded Stakes winner for trainer Chad Brown, who has had great success in this event, winning it six times. A runner-up in the aforementioned First Lady at Keeneland, this gal makes her first try in Southern California and should relish the firm footing. Prat gets the return mount. The ultra-consistent 1-Medoro has never finished off the board in 11 career starts for trainer Peter Eurton and drew the rail today, ensuring a favorable ground-saving journey. She lands in a tough spot with some sharp fillies and mares, but is battle-tested against stiff competition the past two seasons.
Race #8: Selections: 4-3-6
4-Hope Road was no match for her stablemate Splendora in the BC Filly & Mare Sprint when beaten as the chalk, but is likely to rebound today in this softer spot for Team Baffert. A winner of the seven-furlong Ballerina (G1) at Saratoga two back, this talented daughter of Quality Road stretches back out to a mile, where she is 2-for-2. She looks to be a solid gate-to-wire threat against these overmatched fillies and mares. 3-Simply Joking was steadied repeatedly in a disastrous trip in the G2 Raven Run on Oct. 18 at Keeneland and was a non-factor in the Oaks, a race prior to that. The Practical Joke filly looks to regroup in this spot today off a steady and improved work tab, but will need to bring her ‘A’ game to overhaul the short-priced top choice. 6-Precise Timing ran well in her last G3 turf try at 71-1 when making her initial start in the Sadler barn and now moves back to dirt, where she is a multiple stakes-winner at Emerald, albeit with low Beyer figures.
Race #9: Selections: 9-7-12-5
Off the Baffert pair, 9-Rio Grande may offer the better value on the stretch-out and move to grass. The $750k son of Justify has improved Beyer-wise with each subsequent start and looks like a colt that will relish the additional real estate. Justify gets an ordinary 12% with turf routers, but this colt has trained exceptionally well in the a.m., and will likely show more early speed this afternoon with Hernandez. 7-Grinders Switch (by G1 winner Connect) has trained well for his initial try for trainer Richard Mandella, including a “best of 45” bullet in :59.2 on Nov. 24. This lucrative jockey-trainer combo scored with grass firster Brave Deb at 9-1 on Sept. 5. The multiple graded-stakes placed 12-Plutarch drops back down to the maiden ranks, still looking for his first career win for Baffert, and will need to work out a trip from the far outside to do so. At likely short odds, the son of Into Mischief is worth trying to beat with Prat. 5-Honey’s Choice is a logical fit, having hit the board in three turf route starts for D’Amato, and should appreciate the extra eighth of a mile.
