By Eric DeCoster
Bill Mott is one of the greatest trainers in American racing history. For over four decades his presence has been felt across the country, winning just about every major race there is and training countless Eclipse Award winners. He’s technically a Derby winner, having been put up via DQ in 2019 with Country House, but a “real” Derby win still awaits him. Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin operation has spent a good part of the 21st century chasing a Derby win, spending millions upon millions on high quality, Classic level stock. They came close when Essential Quality ran third as the favorite in 2021, but they also still look for a Kentucky Derby victory. Sovereignty, 7th in the standings after the prep season with 110 points, might just be the horse to change their fortunes.
Racing Record and Notable Performances
Sovereignty has had one of the more unusual prep seasons of any horse in the 2025 Kentucky Derby. Bill Mott has always been the type of trainer to gradually build his horses up to their best effort and that’s exactly what he did with this colt. He made his first two starts in races around one turn, running well in both, but neither allowed him to be his best self. In his third career race he moved out to two turns and also took a big step up in class, running in the G3 Street Sense Stakes despite being a maiden. Settling in last early on, he was unleashed rounding the far turn, picking off horses with ease, and motoring to a 5 length victory to break his maiden in graded stakes company. Not only did he pick up a key win over the Churchill Downs surface, but in the process he toppled the eventual Louisiana Derby winner, Tiztastic, and Arkansas Derby winner, Sandman.
He missed a little bit of time in his training after a quick winter rest, but was still able to get his season going in the G2 Fountain of Youth. Given his running style – coming with one big move from the back of the pack – it was fair to be skeptical of him running at Gulfstream Park, where speed horses typically rule the roost. It looked like that was going to stay true in that race, as he had many lengths to make up heading into the stretch, but he kicked it into high gear to just get up at the wire. He made his final prep at Gulfstream and was unable to pick up the pieces in the Florida Derby, closing to run second to Tappan Street.
Pedigree and Connections
- Sire: Into Mischief
- Dam & Damsire: Crowned (by Bernardini)
- Owner: Godolphin, LLC
- Trainer: Bill Mott
- Jockey: Junior Alvarado
Into Mischief hardly needs an introduction. The perennial leading stallion in the United States originally came with the stigma his progeny didn’t have the ability to go the Kentucky Derby distance. That all changed in 2020 when his son, Authentic, won the Kentucky Derby, and then Mandaloun followed that act by being named the 2021 winner. After two years of not being involved in the Derby picture, a grandson of Into Mischief, Mystik Dan (by Goldencents), got the line back in the winners’ circle. Into Mischief shows up as the sire or grandsire of four projected starters in the 2025 Kentucky Derby.
Sovereignty’s dam, Crowned, never raced, but she has some off-track merits to her. With an impressive pedigree and a strong physical build, she was sold for $1.2 million as a yearling to the Godolphin operation. She is by Preakness winner, Bernardini, and out of the talented racemare, Mushka. Also trained by Bill Mott, Mushka was a Grade 2 winning juvenile and Grade 1 winning older horse. She also ran 2nd in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic in 2009. In short, there is plenty of intriguing route influences in this pedigree.
As mentioned earlier, Bill Mott has been one of the top trainers in the country for the better part of 40 years. He’s a Hall of Famer, four-time Eclipse Award winner, and is tied for the fifth most wins in Breeders’ Cup wins with 15. The Triple Crown races have never been his focus, but he’s still had moderate success in them. His biggest day came in the 2019 Kentucky Derby when Country House was elevated to victory after the disqualification of Maximum Security, and stablemate Tacitus ran a fast closing third. While he’s run decent horses in the Derby, a case can easily be made that Sovereignty is the best he’s ever brought here.
Junior Alvarado has been synonymous with the Bill Mott outfit for the last decade or so. They most notably teamed up for many wins with 2023 Horse of the Year, Cody’s Wish, and have also won four Breeders’ Cup together. The pair have joined forces in the last two Kentucky Derbies, briefly making the lead into the stretch before fading to 6th with Resilience last year, and running 9th with Rocket Can in 2023. Alvarado’s best Derby finish came when he was 4th in 2016 with the well regarded Mohaymen.
Final Prep Analysis
- Final Prep Race: G1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park (March 29th)
- Finish Position: 2nd out of 10
- Final Time: 1:49.27
- Beyer Speed Figure: 92
The first sign of potential feat for this 2025 Florida Derby favorite was when Junior Alvarado suffered a pre-race injury earlier on in the week. It forced connections to scramble for a replacement, and they were able to land the capable hands of Manny Franco for the assignment. In the race they settled far off the early speed once more, but this time he was unable to conjure up the rally necessary to win the race. He chased well and was finding his top gear late in the race, indicating he should be able to handle the Derby distance just fine.
Strengths and Concerns
- Strengths: Sovereignty’s class has been proven throughout the year in races he hasn’t even been apart of. His win in the Street Sense last year has gotten even better with time in thanks to the major wins from Sandman and Tiztastic. The win also proved he can get over the Churchill Downs surface well. Another big positive for Sovereignty is that he’s finally getting away from Gulfstream Park, where the track configuration doesn’t suit him in any way, shape, or form. The fact he was able to win there is a testament to his overall ability.
- Concerns: Sovereignty’s speed figures will leave bettors wanting more. Running a 92 Beyer in a final prep, regressing a few points off the Fountain of Youth, is not the strongest indicator for this horse. Other numerical indicators like Brisnet’s Prime Power rating only has him as the 9th best horse in this year’s Derby. His deep closing running style is also a worthy concern as it elevates the possibility that he will encounter traffic trouble in a 20 horse field.
Expert Opinions and Odds
Even though he comes off a loss, it is very reasonable to expect Sovereignty to be the second choice in the wagering on Derby day. This year’s race looks like a bit of a scramble outside of Journalism, but the hype surrounding this horse hardly declined after the Florida Derby loss. The majority of foreign-based wagering outlets have him anywhere from 6-1 to 8-1 in the Derby, and it’s likely that will be his price in the U.S. when the gates open.
Conclusion
Sovereignty has the opportunity to cure a lot of bad Derby beats for Godolphin, Mott, and company. He has overcome more than meets the eye in two races this year and he now returns to the site of his best career win to date. If he can handle the likes of Sandman and Tiztastic like he did at Churchill Downs last October, there is little doubt he will be in the picture down the stretch of the 2025 Kentucky Derby.
