Analysis & Selections By: Dean Keppler @Keppskorner

BEST BET: 9-Night Time (Race 6)

Race #1: Selections: 4-3-6

4-Meaning debuts for trainer Michael McCarthy off a solid work tab. This barn is 3 for 14 (21%) with firsters at Los Al, and this filly is by Gun Runner, who gets a strong 18% with his juvenile debuting offspring. This filly looks to have ability. 3-Thank You India drops out of the Grade 3 Sorrento back into the MDSW ranks for conditioner Andy Mathis after posting consecutive third-place finishes to start her career. The daughter of Practical Joke figures to get another upfront pressing trip and continues to work well in the a.m. for the all-important third career try.  McCarthy’s other filly,6-Definitely Probable, finished an even fourth in her Aug. 30 DMR unveiling and is eligible to move forward off that effort.

Race #2: Selections: 6-4-7

Two sprints to a route, 6-Rocksalot looks quickest off the blocks this afternoon for trainer Jeff Mullins, dropping back down to today’s $12,500 maiden claiming level. The 4-year-old gelding removes the blinkers today and battled on the front end before surrendering late when last seen Aug. 3, facing better. He’s likely to have an easier time today pace-wise. 4-Sweet Knowledge (by Danzing Candy) goes turf to dirt on the class drop for start number two, and the Dan Blacker-trained gelding is likely to improve off his eighth-place unveiling. 7-Maxville makes career start number 24 today, but has never been offered this cheaply. The gelding’s last pair of main track Beyers at Los Al makes him a threat this afternoon despite the long losing streak.

Race #3: Selections: 6-7-3

6-Alan’s Conquest was a sharp winner going 1,000 yards over the evening program on Aug. 31 and has run equally well over the afternoon layout. Ramirez gets the return mount in what looks to be not the strongest $8k claimer. 7-Bobby Anton ran well for third on Aug. 9, going 4 ½ furlongs over the nighttime course, considering he broke through the gate before the start. He steps up in class today off the claim, for a barn that’s 3 for 9 (33%) with a lofty $6.38 ROI with new acquisitions the past five years. A winner at Del Mar this summer, 3-Halo Uncle rallied for the place spot when last trying this afternoon’s course three back. The 4-year-old gelding has run some of the fastest dirt Beyers in this field.

Race #4: Selections: 5-2-8

5-Bust Out (by G1 winner Complexity) has looked super fast in his a.m. drills for conditioner Michael McCarthy and is likely to come out running with Kimura. 2-Rhodes finished far behind stablemate Boyd, who looked like a real runner in that Sept. 7 5 ½-furlong blowout Maiden Special Weight dirt sprint win at Del Mar, but this colt had an excusable effort that afternoon when shuffled back and racing wide. The $550k Uncle Mo Keeneland purchase from Team Baffert is likely to show more in career try number two. 8-Migo is one of two O’Neill-trained juveniles entered here. This son of multiple G1 winner Mitole has some sharp gate drills over the local footing.

Race #5: Selections: 1-4-9

1-Tee N Off is wheeled back off a week’s rest for trainer Steve Knapp, exiting a fourth-place try here last Saturday, and now takes a sizable class drop today from $50k to $12,500 maiden claimers. Kimura takes over for Maldonado. 4-Far Over Loaded flashed speed, grabbed the front, but tired late to third when trying this level at DMR Sept. 1. This is start number 15 today. 9-King Zog is a 17-start maiden that hasn’t been out in roughly 17 months but has hit the board in 10 of 16 tries and has run second three times over this afternoon’s strip. Trainer Kelly Balnum has solid stats with long layoff types.

Race #6: Selections: 9-4-1

The 8-year-old 9-Night Time was successful in his Southern California unveiling on Aug. 3 when rallying strongly late to draw off by 2 ½ lengths and now steps up off the claim for new owner/trainer Jesus Uranga. He’s 2-for-2 going this trip and should enjoy the long Los Al stretch. 4-Atomic Drop has run well in both tries over this course, including a sharp gate-to-wire score against cheaper three-back. 1-Jaguar Jon sports the field’s best last-out Beyer (82) exiting a sharp win over the DMR main track on Aug. 30. A pair of runners (Distant Fleet, Arabian Flirt) have returned to win out of that event. The 3-year-old gelded son of Om must avoid an early tussle with Atomic Drop.

Race #7: Selections: 9-5-1

The speedy 9-Mr. Disrespectful crossed the line first by a nose on Aug. 23 but was disqualified to second for interference late. The stakes-placed gelding was runner-up in the Bertrando S. back in June over this course and looks like the speed of the speed despite the outside draw. The gritty gelding holds a double Beyer advantage over the rest of this field. Turf to dirt 5-Druidic was blanked in both local tries over this course (albeit a couple of years back), but has finished first or second in his last four starts and gets in light this afternoon. 1-Crypto Ride ships back in from Emerald and has run well over this course in the past. The 5-year-old gelding draws the rail and should trip out nicely with a ground-saving journey.

Race #8: Selections 2-6-1

2-Uncle Evco just missed by a nose against $50k maiden claimers when last seen two months ago, racing over this course for trainer Hector Palma. The 3-year-old gelding has trained well for today’s return effort and looks well-spotted to graduate on the class drop. 6-Unique Power goes first off the claim for conditioner Sean Williams after chasing a fast pace and tiring to fifth. The pricey Into Mischief gelding deserves another chance back in for $30k. 1-Going Viral ran second against cheaper when snagged for $12,500 over this course three-back, and now drops out of a close-up fifth-place finish routing on grass against MDSW types Sept. 1.

Race #9: Selections 3-2-4

Multiple Grade 2 winner and class of this field, 3-Nothing Like You was beaten by double digits in her last pair, but makes her third start of the form cycle today for Team Baffert and was a gate-to-wire winner of the Starlet (G2) when last trying this course. Jockey Juan Hernandez comes in for the ride and is an impressive 28 for 47 (60%) with a positive ROI when riding for this top barn at Los Al the past four years. Her stablemate 2-Ooty (Arg) makes her third stateside try this afternoon, exiting a well-beaten sixth and last behind Nothing Like You in the Tranquility Lake S. when eased and walked off the course. She’s capable of rebounding but must race without Lasix again this afternoon. 4-Sakura Blossom goes turf to dirt for trainer Leonard Powell and should appreciate today’s shorter trip and surface switch.

Race #10: Selections 5-1-2

5-Stanford Dropout flashed improved speed but tired to finish second and third in his last pair of sprint tries at Del Mar, and now drops again from $50k to today’s $20,000 level and looks like a strong gate-to-wire threat at this reduced level. 1-Mr. Pippins co-tops the field’s best last-out Beyer exiting back-to-back runner-up finishes at this level. The Stay Thirsty colt has improved with each subsequent start, as evidenced by the numbers since June. Blinkers on 2-Blazing Heat was beaten by double digits in both main track sprint tries over at Del Mar, but trains locally and is eligible to improve over this course with the new equipment in place. Jockey Kyle Frey sticks.
