Analysis & Selections By: Dean Keppler @Keppskorner
BEST BET: 1-L Rankin (Race 1)
Race #1: Selections: 1-4-5
1-L Rankin goes turf to dirt and drops in for a first-time tag this afternoon for trainer Peter Miller. This gelded son of Maximus Mischief finished second over this racetrack in his June 21 debut and should appreciate today’s class relief. Kimura climbing aboard adds to the appeal. 4-A. P. Again has been beaten by double digits in all three of his career tries for Team O’Neil, but also shows up for a first-time tag. Improvement likely. Trainer Manuel Badilla sends out firster 5-Itchy (by Audible), who has trained steadily for his first career start. This barn has solid overall stats with its debut runners.
Race #2: Selections: 2-5-4
The 1-for-15 2-Malibu Rocks finished a solid second over this racetrack and one-mile trip three-back, when facing N2L $16k claimers, and now drops in for the $12,500 level. He exits a troubled trip eighth against much better on Aug. 29. 5-Brother Tony goes first off the claim for conditioner Francisco Rodriguez, who has solid stats with new barn acquisitions. This 3-year-old gelding broke his maiden over course three back and sports the field’s best last-out Beyer. 4-Naismith goes two sprints to a route this afternoon and figures to be on or close to the lead today for Hess. The 7-year-old usually settles for the underneath exotics, however.
Race #3: Selections: 4-3-5
4-One Step Beyond is a logical win threat off his recent runner-up finish and (48) dirt Beyer going 5 ½ furlongs at DMR on Aug. 22. The Pavel juvenile finished second in his lone attempt over this venue three back, as well. This looks like graduation day. 3-Another Juanito finished an even well-beaten fourth in his Sept. 5 unveiling but is eligible to improve in career try number two on the class drop from $50k to $30,000 maiden claimers. This barn boasts a solid 4 for 16 (25%) record with a lofty $4.66 ROI over the past four years with second-time starters. 5-Very Quiet has been trounced in all three career tries for Miller, including his first in Southern California back on July 31. The gelding plummets in class this afternoon.
Race #4: Selections: 2-4-7
2-Halo Rando may have hit the front too soon when kicking away by a couple of lengths before getting run down late and settling for second on Aug. 3 at this level. The gelding finished a wide fifth as the beaten favorite in his lone try over this course two back. 4-Raging Waters was a much-improved second at 19-1 with a field’s best (77) last-out Beyer and now drops another notch this afternoon. 7-Panuco drops off the Aug. 15 Gary Stute claim, which is never an encouraging sign, but was a maiden winner in his lone try over this course. The gelding makes his third start of the form cycle today.
Race #5: Selections: 2-7-1
2-Lil’ Boom Boom has finished first or second in six of seven career tries and proven over this racetrack. The daughter of Stay Thirsty holds a double Beyer advantage over this field and drops in for a career-low claiming tag. 7-Princess Daddy has lost 13 straight but drops in for a career-low claiming tag today while making his first start over the local venue. This 3-year-old filly is eligible to wake up in this softer spot. 1-Selsae finished third over this course at this level when last seen back on June 29, a race that’s produced a pair of next-out winners.
Race #6: Selections: 4-7-5
4-Rock N Roll Song is a multiple winner over the evening course but 0-for-7 over the afternoon layout. Nonetheless, this six-year-old mare has good early zip and is a legitimate threat to wire this field that’s come up light on speed. The Jesus Uranga-trained mare is reunited with winning pilot Ramirez. 7-Outer Sunset is 1-for-1 over this course and exits a decent third on Aug. 16 when breaking a step slow. This 4-time winning filly projects to get a favorable upfront pressing trip with today’s outside trip. 5-Woodbine Way steps up in class but exits back-to-back second-place efforts going shorter over the evening program.
Race #7: Selections: 6-4-1
6-Stay in Line goes first off the claim for conditioner Andy Mathis, exiting a 3 ¾-length gate-to-wire winner on Aug. 22. The 5-year-old mare sports the field’s best last-out main track Beyer (75). Turf to dirt 4-Oveta’s Hobby has finished in the money in eight of nine career starts for Sadler and has run well in both tries over this oval. 1-Emirates Affair goes first off the claim for conditioner Bob Hess, off a solid second in his first Southern California start behind Stay in Line. The 11-time winner is eligible to move forward on that effort.
Race #8: Selections 3-8-5
3-Headstrong Ways has never tried the main track but is by Munnings, who gets a solid 17% with dirt sprint starters. This 3-year-old filly has yet to hit the board, but has been facing much stiffer competition in all four grass sprint starts for Baltas and may be aggressively sent by jockey Brayan Pena. 8-Smiling Rapper shortens back up to his preferred sprint distance this afternoon and switches to Kimura, who has done well (6 for 26-23%) when riding for conditioner Bill McLean. 5-Smooth Over is a 10-start maiden that finished second at this level in consecutive starts two and three back.
