Race 7: MC 25k, 3-6YO, 1 1/16m, Turf

| BRIGHTY | MC20k, Lrl, 7F, Fast, 12/14/24 – 2nd | As an outside foe broke violently inwards, ‘BRIGHTY’ was shut off at the start & forced back to last where he was patiently ridden ~11+L off the pace to the far turn. While being squeezed along, he then began to advance on the far turn & built good momentum to ~1/4 before he tipped out 6W into the centre of the track off the home turn & came under a ride. He was still ~6L off the pace ~3/16 pole but responded well to pressure & then rallied strongly into a clear 2nd late. Was impeded at the start which resulted in him getting too far behind, then rallied. As an off the pace runner, the interference was less significant to him than it would have been to other horses, & it’s unlikely he’d have beaten the winner in any case. However, he still did well to finish 2nd & his effort can be marginally upgraded. |
| AMAZING BERNIE | MC16k, Pen, 1m 70yds, Fast, 03/27/25 – 3rd | ‘AB’ tracked the pace under a tight hold between foes to ~5/8 pole before he moved to the outside of horses 3W & came under slight encouragement. He was ~3L off the pace as the field hit the far turn & from there, he began to make minor headway under a ride, moving to be within ~1.5L of the pace in 3rd ~1/4 pole. He then swung 4-5W into the stretch & came under a stronger ride before finishing evenly to hold 3rd but he lacked the pace to challenge the top two late. Sat a clean trip though was wide on the far turn. Looked to try hard but just wasn’t good enough. The switch to turf will need to help today because it was hard to see him improving massively upon this effort. |
| TRIPLE SEC | MC45k, Lrl, 1 1/16M, Firm, 04/27/25 – 10th | Having broken from the wide outside gate, ‘TS’ raced in mid-pack 2-3W to ~1/2 mile pole. He then advanced to be within ~4L of the pace entering the far turn & loomed menacingly behind the leaders 3W on the bend, despite lugging out a touch, seemingly with good momentum behind him. However, having then come 3-4W into the lane, he came under a strong ride but could not go on & weakened quickly. A clean trip though a touch wide. Traveled well into the race & then looked dangerous on the far turn but then weakened quickly without a visible excuse. Lugged out a touch on the bend. |
| SOUPER CRUNCHY | MC35k, GP, 1M 70yds, Synth, 03/26/25 – 5th | ‘SC’ lacked speed from the gate & dropped to rear early, then took the first turn 3-4W before moving forward outside horses to race ~2L behind the modest pace in mid-pack. He traveled well to the far turn, then easily advanced ~4W on the bend to enter the stretch ~1L off the pace in 2nd. He then came under a strong ride between horses but failed to quicken off the modest pace & finished evenly, losing multiple positions late. A wide but clean trip. Traveled well into the race & looked dangerous turning for home but, not for the first time, he found little off the bridle late. A stronger pace, plus today’s drop back down in class should help. |
| MAUPANSANT | MSW, Lrl, 1M, Sloppy, 05/04/25 – 6th | ‘MAUPANSANT’ wasn’t rushed following a clean break from the rail post & raced in mid-division for the first two furlongs. He then became outpaced ~3/4 pole & dropped to last while being encouraged forward. From there, he remained in a distant last under a strong to the wire. He also made an early lead change on the far turn. Dropped back to last early & offered little. Not sure he was in love with the kickback – maybe the switch to turf today will help? Didn’t like the fact he took the far turn in the wrong lead. Uninspiring. |
| TRIP SWITCH | MC16k, Lrl, 1M, Firm, 04/18/25 – 6th | ‘TS’ broke inwards but was quickly corrected & ridden hard from the gate. He showed brief speed heading into the first turn but not enough to establish the lead & dropped back to race in mid-pack to ~9/16 pole. From there, he began dropping back & came under a ride 3-4W but failed to respond & remained well back to the wire. Sat a clean trip though was a touch wide far turn. Lacked early speed & a finishing effort too. Uninspiring. |
| TATE’S WAR CRY | MC45k, Lrl, 1 1/16M, Firm, 04/27/25 – 9th | ‘TWC’ was bumped on both sides at the start but wasn’t too badly impeded. He then dropped to the rail & chased the pace in mid-pack to the far turn. From there, as the pace quickened in front, he began struggling to keep up & dropped back under encouragement. He then swung for home under a strong ride ~8L off the pace & finished at one pace, never threatening. Sat a clean trip but was never involved. Finished at one pace – looked like a true stayer who’d appreciate a fast pace to close into. Entitled to improve from this debut. |
| LATIN REBEL | MSW, Lrl, 5 1/2F, Firm, 04/19/25 – 5th | ‘LR’ broke on top but was then out sped for the lead & dropped back to chase the pace in a share of 2nd ~3W into the turn. A rival then came with a run on his outside & put him in tight between horses ~3/8 pole, forcing him to check sharply which lost him ~4L & significant momentum. He was given time to recover from there but having then come under a strong ride in the stretch, he failed to get back into the race & weakened. Had an obvious excuse, however, he was 14/1 & one would have liked to have seen him make more of a run in the stretch, even after the trouble. Not overly encouraging though today’s stretch out in trip could help if getting loose on the lead. Finished like he may possibly get further. |
| TELL ‘EM I’M COMIN (MTO) | MC45k, Lrl, 1 1/16M, Firm, 04/27/25 – 11th | ‘TEIC’ lacked speed from the gate & dropped to an isolated last early where he rained under patient handling ~12L off the pace to the far turn. He then tried to advance 2-4W on the far turn but failed to do so & remained well back to the wire. Lacked early speed & a finishing effort. Never involved. Uninspiring. MTO – a return to dirt today could help (it will need to). |
| ARJAY | MC15k, TP, 1M, Synth, 03/13/25 – 8th | ‘ARJAY’ was restless in the gate, then broke sharp, dove to the rail & set an even, uncontested pace under a tight hold to the far turn. He was then challenged & joined for the lead ~3/8 pole. From there, he came under a strong ride. He hung in there along the rail to ~3/16 pole but then made an early lead change & stopped in the stretch. He was not hard ridden late. Had no visible excuse having set a modest, uncontested lead to the far turn. Made an early lead change entering the lane & then stopped quickly (maybe something amiss?). Disappointing at 6/5 odds. Feel he’s better than this. |
| STORM FORCE | MC16k, Lrl, 1M, Firm, 04/18/25 – 6th | ‘SF’ broke a beat slow & was then pinched between horses which caused him to stumble & get away towards rear. He was then caught 4W on the first turn before he settled into a nice rhythm ~6L off the slow pace 4W heading to the far turn. From there, as the pace quickened in front, he became outpaced & came under a strong ride. He then turned for home ~9L off the pace & failed to advance in the stretch. Was troubled at the start, largely because he broke a beat slow. Raced well off a slow pace, then failed to quicken. A fairly uninspiring effort. |
| ARMED N DANGEROUS (AE) | MC45k, Lrl, 1 1/16M, Firm, 04/27/25 – 7th | ‘AND’ took a bump at the start but recovered & got away okay before settling into a tracking position along the rail ~5L off the pace early. He traveled well along the rail to the far turn, then became outpaced & came under a ride as the pace quickened in front. He turned for home ~6L off the pace & finished evenly, remaining in that position to the wire. Perfect rail trip. Became a touch outpaced on the far turn & then finished evenly. Ran like he’d appreciate a fast pace to run at. |

| QUAHOG REPUBLIC (AE) | MSW, Lrl, 1M, Firm, 10/12/24 – 7th | Having broken from the outside gate, ‘QH’ raced in mid-pack, slightly behind the bridle, 3-4W around the first turn to ~1/2 mile pole. He then came under pressure heading into & around the far turn but couldn’t advance, instead just holding his position in 5th. He then swung 4W into the lane under a strong ride & weakened. Clean trip though a touch wide. Didn’t travel that well & offered little late. Fairly uninspiring. Today’s drop in class will help. |

He then gradually reeled in the leader under gentle encouragement rounding the far turn & built good momentum to draw upside at the top of the stretch ~3W. From there, he came under a strong ride & drew off to score comfortably. Perfect trip stalking & pouncing upon the loose leader. Much the best at 3/5. Drew off well like he has more to offer. |
| DON’T WAIT UP | Alw, Lrl, 6F, Sloppy, 04/26/25 – 5th | ‘DWU’ broke cleanly but lacked speed & dropped back to rear early where he was patiently ridden chasing the slow pace to the far turn. He then came under a ride 3W on the bend but became outpaced as the pace quickened in front & failed to advance. Having then turned for home ~12L off the pace, he weakened to the wire. Was in rear throughout & never threatened without a visible excuse. Uninspiring. |
| BACKNTHEWOODS | SA, Lrl, 6F, Good, 04/13/25 – 7th | Having broken cleanly from the outside gate, ‘BACKNTHEWOODS’ chased the pace in the clear 4W to the far turn before he advanced under minimal urging outside horses to be ~2L off the pace ~5/16 pole. He then began to struggle, came under a strong ride, got floated ~7W off the bend & weakened under a half-hearted ride to the wire. Sat a wide trip though that likely didn’t make much difference. He traveled well into the race but then stopped fairly quickly in the stretch without a visible excuse. |
| LITTLE LANCE | Alw, Lrl, 1M, Fast, 04/18/25 – 8th | ‘LL’ was allowed to stride forward from the rail draw & raced ~1/2L off the pace in 2nd to the far turn. He then eased back into the pocket as the leader dropped to the rail rounding the turn. He continued traveling well in the pocket to ~5/16 pole but then began struggling, dropped back & came under a ride. Having then turned for home ~8L off the lead with seemingly no chance, he weakened tamely under a ride in the stretch. Perfect trip stalking the pace along the rail. Stopped quickly in the stretch without a visible excuse. Too bad to be true? |
| FIVE DREAMS | SA, Lrl, 6F, Good, 04/13/25 – 1st | ‘FD’ was hustled hard from the rail draw & worked into a pocket stalking position on the leader’s heels. She remained there to ~5/16 pole, then eased out into the 2P & comfortably drew upsides the leader ~1/4 pole, traveling best. She then drifted out 4-5W off the home turn, came under a strong ride & determinedly edged away to the wire. Dream stalk & pounce trip. Traveled best into the race & then determinedly drew off. A likable victory, though the track was fast that day & it’s hard to see how she improves. |
| LADDIE DANCE | Alw, Lrl, 5 1/2F, Firm, 04/25/25 – 11th | ‘LD’ was rushed up between horses to take the lead early & then crossed to the rail heading into the turn. Under encouragement, she then dueled for the lead around the turn into the stretch before coming under a strong ride at the top of the lane. From there, she gradually weakened back to 11th, despite trying hard. Went hard early, then stopped. Her 18/1 dueling partner held on for 4th, so her finish really was sub par. Will need to improve switched back to the dirt today. |
Race 9: Claiming 16k, 3YO+F, 5F, Turf

| REASSESS | Clm17k, GP, 5F, Synth, 04/17/25 – 4th | ‘REASSESS’ was hustled hard from the gate, then stalked the pace ~2L behind the leader in the 2P while being encouraged to hold her position. She then came under a stronger ride when beginning to struggle rounding into the stretch, came 3W into the stretch & then faded at one pace. Was ridden from start to finish & looked a touch outpaced at the distance. Showed a nice attitude but off this effort, she needs further to score. |
| BOSSY KATE | Clm25k, Lrl, 5 1/2F, Firm, 04/27/25 – 11th | ‘BK’ lacked speed from the gate & dropped to rear, then quickly crossed to the rail. She then became outpaced ~1/2 mile pole & began losing further ground before she turned for home ~20L off the pace & came under a strong ride. From there, she failed to respond & came home a long way behind in last. Lacked speed & never factored without visible excuse. Uninspiring. |
| SHARED AUTHORITY | Clm25k, Lrl, 5 1/2F, Firm, 04/27/25 – 4th | ‘SA’ broke sharp, sped to the front, crossed to the rail & set an uncontested, honest pace to the far turn. She was then taken on for the lead rounding the bend into the stretch & came under a ride upon straightening. She responded to pressure & held her lead to ~1/8th pole but then began struggling. Her rider then pulled her whip through & unbalanced the horse, resulting in a bump with a rival. From there, she weakened into an isolated 4th. Possibly did too much too soon but ran a likable race at 14/1 off the layoff regardless. Wasn’t particularly helped by her rider in the stretch. Can improve. |
| GLOSSAMER | Alw, Lrl, 1 1/16M, Firm, 10/24/25 – 8th | ‘GLOSS’ showed good natural speed & adopted a comfortable rail stalking position early. Under a very tight hold, she then tipped out into the 2P down the back stretch before moving forward to pressure the leader heading into & around the far turn. She was within a neck of the lead, looming dangerously ~5/16 pole. She then came under a strong ride turning for home but failed to advance before being put in tight between foes ~3/16 pole. From there, she weakened quickly. Traveled well into the race but found little off the bridle & weakened. Wasn’t helped by being put in tight late but that didn’t really make much difference – she was a stopping at the time. |
| MADDIE TEN | Clm12k, Lrl, 7F, Fast, 05/03/25 – 5th | ‘MT’ broke okay but was then out sped in the opening furlong & side swiped by a rival which forced her to check back ~6L off the pace. She then gradually crept closer again 3W heading into the turn & maintained her progress to take 4th ~3/8 pole. Her momentum then stalled somewhat though as the leading duo quickened away ~5/16 pole. From there, she came under a strong ride & weakened after being floated out 6W into the & only changed her lead ~1/8th pole. Was slightly impeded early & floated wide but that certainly didn’t cost her the race. This was a subpar performance from her with no obvious excuse. Didn’t particularly like her late lead change. |
| POLICE WOMAN | Clm25k, Lrl, 5 1/2F, Firm, 04/27/25 – 6th | Following a clean break, ‘PW’ eased back to rear ~10L off the pace heading into the far turn before she made a quick move on the bend & built eyecatching momentum to the top of the stretch. She turned for home ~7L off the pace, then came under a strong ride & moved to within 5L of the lead ~1/8th pole, however, her run then flattened out & she simply held her position in 6th at one pace late. Clean trip. Made an eyecatching move on the bend but then flattened out. Ran like she’d appreciate today’s cut back to a flat 5F, though she likely needs more. |
| TITIAN TYRANT | Clm5k, CT, 7F, Muddy, 04/25/25 – 4th | ‘TT’ chased the pace in mid-pack 2W to the first turn where she took a bump but was hardly impeded. She then continued chasing the pace to the back stretch before being taken into the clear 4W. From there, she made a move heading into & around the far turn & managed to advance into 3rd ~3/16 pole but could not progress any further & then ran home at one pace in the stretch for a poor 4th. Took a minor bump early but that was inconsequential. Chased the pace, then faded late. Definitely didn’t look to want a cut to 5F. |
| DARK DUTCHESS | Clm7.5k, Prx, 6F, Fast, 01/30/25 – 7th | Having broken cleanly from the outside gate, ‘DD’ stalked the slow pace under a hold in the clear 5W heading into the turn. She then became outpaced as the pace quickened rounding the turn, dropping back & coming under a ride ~5/16 pole. From there, she swung 4W into the stretch & gradually faded. Sat a wide trip through that didn’t cost her the race. She ran a below par race from the start without a visible excuse. Effort followed by a layoff. |
| ANY FOOLS GOLD | Clm40k, Lrl, 5 1/2F, Firm, 04/19/25 – 7th | ‘AFG’ took a hefty bump & was in close quarters for the first 6-7 strides a of the race which resulted in her racing towards the rear early. She was patiently ridden in the 2-3P ~8L off the pace heading into & around the far turn before she came under a ride ~1/4 pole & swung 7W into the stretch. From there, she failed to menace. Was bothered at the start & then gave away a lot of ground on the bend, so this effort can be marked up somewhat. However, at 72/1, it’s unlikely she’d have troubled the judge & one would have liked to have seen a better finishing effort. |
| NUWANDA | Clm25k, Lrl, 5 1/2F, Firm, 04/27/25 – 5th | ‘NUWANDA’ traveled well tracking them pace 4W into & around the turn before coming under a ride when ~5L off the pace at the top of the stretch. From there, she ground out an even finish for 5th. Clean trip though wide. Ignore the chart comment ‘bumped start’ – that hardly happened. Ran oaky, but didn’t look to want a cut back to a flat 5F & wasn’t visually very impressive. |
| SHE’S A GEM (MTO) | Clm12k, Lrl, 5 1/2F, Sloppy, 04/26/25 – 1st | ‘SAG’ showed good natural speed & dueled for the lead under a tight hold into the bend 2W. She then pulled her rider into the lead ~3/8 pole. From there, she was allowed to go on with it & opened easily up by ~3L at the top of the stretch before coming under a ride. She didn’t find much off the bridle & had her lead drastically reduced late but she had done enough early to hold on. With 7lbs off her back, she showed great early speed & managed to hold on late. Likable attitude. The cut back to a flat 5F today will suit. |
| FROSTY MAYA (MTO) | Clm5k, CT, 4 1/2F, Sloppy, 04/10/25 – 4th | ‘FM’ showed good speed from the outside gate & pressed the lead 2-3W into the turn before losing ground on the leader & coming under a strong ride ~3/16 pole. From there, she weakened quickly. Flashed speed to the turn, then stopped quicker than one would have liked to see. Her finishing effort would raise concerns with today’s 5F trip in mind. |
Horses to Follow
R7: BRIGHTY (5/1 ML)
Although not seen for 152-days, BRIGHTY deserves the upmost respect in today’s seventh – a MC 25k over 1 1/16-miles on the turf. Milan Milosevic’s trainee progressed nicely throughout 2024, capping the year off with two in the money finishes at odds of 16/1 and 5/1, despite an imperfect trip last time. Both of those efforts in particular earned her speed figures that make her competitive in this winnable looking spot, and as she returns to the track off an attractive work-tab featuring a sharp bullet workout on May 02, she looks an appealing option at a respectable price. She should sit a comfortable stalking trip from the rail and will also have no problem if the race is washed onto the main track.
R8: CYBERTIME (3/5 ML)
The lightly raced 5-year-old CYBERTIME has taken his game to a new level recently and should be extremely tough to beat in today’s eighth. Trained by Anthony Farrior, the son of NOT THIS TIME has won his last two starts at Mahoning Valley by clear margins, earning Beyer speed figures of 95 and 86 in the process. Those figures have been solidified by several horses he beat running well in later races. Per the trip notes, however, he still doesn’t look to have peaked. With a lack of speed signed on in today’s race, he should be able to adopt a forward position from the rail under Sheldon Russell – with whom he’s to-for-two – and from there, he could be near impossible to stop once again.
R9: SHARED AUTHORITY (7/2 ML)
Returning from a 106-day layoff, SHARED AUTHORITY ran a solid race at Laurel last time out, setting a fair pace at 14/1 into the final furlong before tiring late, likely due to needing the run. Trip notes mention her apprentice rider struggled with the crop late and became notably unbalanced, but she still finished just four lengths back, earning a 52 Beyer. With that effort behind her, she’s likely to step forward today, especially dropping in class. The pace setup suggests she could get an easy lead again, and over a flat 5 furlongs, that could make her hard to catch. She should handle a switch to the main track if needed.

That’s right, I used to contribute to the newsletter with horses to follow and eye-catchers, but covering the Maryland circuit for ITM is my focus now.
