How He Got Here
Track Phantom took several tries to break his maiden but flashed some ability right out of the gate. The front-running colt made the first three starts of his career at Churchill Downs and got a breakthrough maiden win in his third attempt. Once he broke the ice, he was on a roll with back to back stakes wins in Louisiana – the Gun Runner and then the LeComte. He nearly stole the Risen Star on the front end before getting caught by the highly regarded Sierra Leone. His speed landed him a fourth-place finish, as the favorite, in the Louisiana Derby.
How He Fits Here
Track Phantom has shown he has speed and a lot of it. He is the kind that gets emboldened on the front end and in a field of nineteen rivals, plenty of whom have cruising speed of their own, he may not get everything his own way on the front end.
Connections and Pedigree
There are few races trainer Steve Asmussen has not won over the course of his decorated career but the Kentucky Derby is one of them. He saddled Nehro (2011) and Lookin at Lee (2017) to runner-up finishes and was third with Curlin (2007) and Gun Runner (2016).
Track Phantom, a $500,000 yearling, is son of the prolific stallion Quality Road and out of graded stakes winner Miss Sunset.
