A New Twist in the Fair Hill Story

The betting saga PTF has been covering all week took a fresh turn Thursday. Angel Quiroz — the trainer whose Fair Hill–prepped runners triggered the six-figure sting on British bookmakers — has been charged by the Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit with a doping violation. The charge stems from a positive test for albuterol, a banned substance, in a sample taken from the filly Bonita Rough after she breezed a half-mile at Fair Hill on July 10. He faces a possible two-year ban.

A couple of things are worth noting. Albuterol is no obscure agent — it’s a well-known prohibited substance, a beta-agonist that the industry’s own medication authorities flag for its potential to build lean muscle, which makes it a curious one to turn up on a work tab. And it’s important to be precise about what this is and isn’t: Bonita Rough was not one of the horses that ran on August 9, and HIWU’s charge concerns the medication positive, not the betting activity. Whether — and how — the two threads connect is exactly what the ongoing investigation will have to determine; HISA has said it won’t speculate on the outcome.

Quiroz has not been suspended and can request a hearing before a neutral arbitrator; he waived his right to a second-sample analysis. He continues to deny any wrongdoing in the betting matter, telling the Thoroughbred Daily News he doesn’t see what the fuss is about. The story is still developing on both fronts. Tomorrow: The King’s Plate

Canada’s biggest day is here. The 167th King’s Plate goes tomorrow at Woodbine — a $1 million, mile-and-a-quarter test over the Tapeta, the first jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown — with the feature itself carded for 6:12 p.m. ET atop a 13-race program (first post 12:30). Luster, the runaway Woodbine Oaks winner, is the even-money favorite from the rail under John Velazquez, and bids to become the 40th filly to win the historic race for Canadian Hall of Fame trainer Josie Carroll. No Canadian-bred has swept the Triple Crown since Wando in 2003.
