PTF sat down with Matt Vagvolgyi of Race Lens on the Players’ Podcast to dig into the numbers behind Breeders’ Cup weekend at Keeneland: shipper angles, running-style filters, and which 2026 Breeders’ Cup runners fit them. As Matt put it, “a stat shouldn’t give you the answer… it should provide the context.”
The Race Lens angles
Kentucky Downs shippers
The filter: Horses whose last start came at Kentucky Downs, now running at Keeneland.

Breeders’ Cup fit: How’s Al Today (Juvenile Turf, 3/1 morning line)
Matt said the 2026 numbers have not changed much, but he would not dismiss these horses and sees them getting a bit better. PTF tied the stat to How’s Al Today.
Saratoga dirt shippers
The filter: Horses coming off a dirt start at Saratoga, running on the Keeneland dirt.

Breeders’ Cup fit: Qirat (Mile, 30/1 morning line)
Matt suspects a deeper, tiring turf course based on watching workouts. PTF called the stat a reality check on his longshot idea, Qirat, but said it would not put him off.
Top late pace figure, Keeneland dirt-route graded stakes
The filter: Graded stakes dirt routes at Keeneland, horses with a sustained running style and the best late pace figure in the field.

Breeders’ Cup fit: Sovereignty (Classic, 5/2 morning line)
Sovereignty has the top late pace figure in the Classic, a 127 on the Equibase scale.
Matt’s horse: Nitrogen (Distaff, 6/5 morning line). His model makes her the top projected win-percentage horse of the two days.
Matt is also rooting for Hughes (Juvenile, even money morning line), though he admitted to being a bit nervous about how much Bob Baffert has talked up stablemate Salahudin (Juvenile, 6/1 morning line).
PTF’s takeaway: “Stats tell you what happened. What we want to know is what’s going to happen going forward.”
About Race Lens: Race Lens (racelens.equibase.com) is Equibase’s handicapping tool for filtering past results by track, surface, distance, running style and more. On the show, Matt said you can reach it from equibase.com by clicking Race Lens, with promotions available for new users.
